Attacking the #1 Driver of Climate Change

Jumpstarting the urgently needed demise of animal agriculture

SOS #282 -- J. Morris Hicks -- (6-11-24)

This SOS Memo explores how giant companies can greatly improve their profitability by promoting plant-based eating in their workforce.

In the text below, we describe major financial opportunities, wherein huge companies like Amazon can save billions of dollars on healthcare -- by jumpstarting a way of eating that will promote human health -- while sharply reducing the leading driver of climate change, animal agriculture.

Today's memo was inspired by a recent, 2.5 hour podcast conversation between Rip Esselstyn, the founder of PLANTSTRONG Foods and John Mackey, the co-founder and longtime CEO of Whole Foods Market.

There is another link to this rare conversation later in the "Bottom Line" section of this SOS Memo.

This past weekend, I watched every minute of this lengthy video on Rip's PLANTSTRONG podcast.

Toward the end, I had a blinding flash of the obvious regarding how these two men could play a pivotal role in reversing climate change.

As I explain herein, they could leverage their collective fame, knowledge, experience, know-how and leadership skills -- to provide a powerful financial incentive for the largest corporations in the world to take giant steps toward quickly reducing the leading driver of climate change, animal agriculture.

As you may know, for the past few years, I've been promoting a Game Plan for Reversing Climate Change -- featuring a group of well-known media personalities who would be brought up to speed by a group of scholars in a special meeting hosted by Eric Adams, the mayor of New York City.

But, so far, that Game Plan has not garnered the necessary sponsorship of the mayor. And now we're running out of time -- prompting me to promote a dream partnership akin to what I was trying to do two decades ago.

A Little Background

Over twenty years ago, during the first six months of 2003, I discovered that we humans were eating the wrong food for our species. We evolved to eat predominantly whole, plant-based foods -- but, in the developed world, we had shifted almost totally to a diet of meat, dairy, eggs, fish and highly processed carbohydrates.

Also, in early 2003, I learned that by simply choosing to eat a whole food, plant-based diet -- that most chronic diseases could be easily reversed -- if we simply started eating the "right" food for our species.Therein I saw a golden business opportunity for this former systems engineer and process improvement consultant.

Long before I learned that animal agriculture is BY FAR the leading driver of climate change -- I saw an exciting consulting opportunity for me and my business partners to assist large corporations in sharply lowering their cost of healthcare.

Although we got very close to a deal at the Staples corporate offices in Framingham, MA, where my son, Jason, was working in 2008, we were never able to close the deal.

That said, for the next decade, I continued to seek consulting opportunities. Along the way, we developed many tools that could have been used with any number of future clients. But, unfortunately, those tools have never been fully developed or used at all.

You can read all about them on my home page at this link: Corporate Wellness and Sustainability. Our envisioned approach with corporations begins with leveraging the power of the 4Leaf Survey to "automatically reduce the cost of healthcare" -- by encouraging millions of employees to begin moving in the direction of whole food, plant-based eating.

You can read a brief summary of what I'm talking about by clicking this image. Just so you know, ARCH is an acronym for "automatically reducing the cost of healthcare."

Although never tested in the real world, we are confident that this simple, powerful tool can help to educate, motivate and track employee progress as the workforce is systematically encouraged, and rewarded for making dietary improvements that can improve their own health — while simultaneously lowering the cost of healthcare for the corporation.

Conveniently, as millions of people and corporate earnings begin to get healthier, we will simultaneously be dismantling the leading driver of climate change, animal agriculture.

That was our thinking fifteen years ago, but we never did land that first corporate client. There are many reasons for that failure, but I prefer to focus on how we can get it done NOW!

Why will John Mackey and Rip Esselstyn be able to accomplish what we could not?

Before trying to answer that question, I would like to point out that I have always thought that Amazon would be the very best client for leveraging the power of ARCH to "automatically reduce the cost of healthcare" for their 1.5 million employees.

  • According to a quick search, the annual cost of healthcare at Amazon is estimated at TEN BILLION dollars.

First of all, success at Amazon would almost guarantee success in a host of other corporations where the cost of healthcare is out of control.

Secondly, I am near certain that John Mackey would be more likely to land Amazon as a client -- than any other person alive.

Thirdly, he has decades of personal knowledge regarding how a whole food, plant-based diet can promote vibrant health, reverse chronic disease and lower the cost of healthcare. He also just recently launched a whole new kind of healthcare company.

Two more reasons:

  • As the co-founder and long-time CEO of Whole Foods Market, John Mackey led the entire process of negotiating the sale of his beloved company to Amazon. He no doubt has earned the respect and trust of Jeff Bezos and many others on the Amazon team.
  • Importantly, Mackey would have Rip Esselstyn at his side, a close friend and former employee of Whole Foods himself.

As you can sense from the 2.5 hour video below, these two men would make incredible business partners -- as they show giant corporations how to sharply reduce their cost of healthcare. For me, it would be a dream come true to be an integral part of the first ever ARCH installation in a corporate setting.

  • Importantly, as Amazon and other clients begin to save billions of dollars on healthcare, they would be igniting a sharp global reduction in the single driver of climate change that is greater than all other drivers combined: animal agriculture.

One possibility I should mention -- is that Amazon may wish to purchase the ARCH by 4Leaf intellectual property and then license hundreds of other giant corporations to use it.

I am open to any possibility that raises the chances that ARCH will soon be leveraged to accomplish the most important mission in the history of humanity -- abolishing animal agriculture all over the world.

As for Rip Esselstyn, he is the founder of PLANTSTRONG Foods, a fierce competitor, son of the great Cleveland Clinic physician, Caldwell Esselstyn, a former fireman, a long-term triathlete and the author of the best-selling Engine 2 Diet.

In addition, he worked at Whole Foods Market himself and he and John Mackey enjoy an excellent, mutually respectful relationship to this day.

If these two great leaders decide to make something like I have described here actually happen -- you can rest assured that it WILL happen. Here's the link to their 2.5 hour conversation.

The Bottom Line

We know that animal agriculture is, by far, the leading driver of climate change and that it is larger than all other drivers combined.

It is also the only driver of climate change that is driven purely by individual choices three times a day. It's what we choose to eat!

Along with Dr. Sailesh Rao, Glen Merzer and a host of others -- we have been trying to promote a global shift to plant-based eating for decades, but it is simply not happening nearly fast enough.

We've also been promoting a "Game Plan for Reversing Climate Change" with the mayor of New York City. Relative to that envisioned initiative, we ask this question:

What would happen if the global media were to become aware of the simple fact that animal agriculture is, by far, the leading driver of climate change and the ONLY driver that is possible to completely eliminate by 2030?

  • Note that this NYC initiative has not yet happened. In summary, we're running out of options, leading us to this conclusion:

It's all about the money! What is the most plausible way we can trigger sharp reductions in the leading driver of climate change in the near term?

It is by showing large corporations how to improve their profits by simply helping millions of employees improve their own health -- a mission that will add many billions to their bottom lines.

We do that by "helping" all of their associates promote their own health. That saves money for themselves and their employer -- while simultaneously dealing a knockout punch to the leading driver of climate change.

When a company like Amazon, with 1.5 million employees, starts cutting their cost of healthcare by 20% or more, a domino effect around the world will be triggered as competitors everywhere are compelled to follow suit. I am reminded of a quote that I made fifteen years ago:

As the first wave of CEOs begins to take advantage of the many benefits that come from a healthier workforce, other companies who don’t undertake similar initiatives will have trouble competing with those who do.

In Closing. Regarding this entire topic, I would cherish the opportunity to work closely with John Mackey and Rip Esselstyn for the rest of my life. That said, I am not giving up on the envisioned "game plan" with Mayor Adams described below.

Actually, I am confident that once the mayor hears about what John Mackey's team might be doing at Amazon, he may be inspired to consider making our envisioned "game plan" a reality in New York.

That "game plan" is described briefly here:

Game Plan for Reversing Climate Change

The opening question is this...

What would happen if the global media were to become aware of the simple fact that animal agriculture is, by far, the leading driver of climate change and the ONLY driver that is theoretically possible to completely eliminate by 2030?

Finally, please take the time to watch this FREE, 35-minute video. At the one-minute mark, a University of Oxford scientist sums up the situation succinctly:

"If we don't address what we eat, we simply won't make it."

on this most urgent topic.

Just before publishing the John Mackey SOS Memo on 6-11-24, I watched this excellent, 30-year-old documentary that illustrates the failures of our institutions to tell the global public the complete truth about our FOOD.

Shamefully, for many decades, Cornell, other schools of nutrition and hundreds of governments have withheld the TRUTH about our food choices from the public.

Had they shared that truth long ago, we may very well NOT be facing runaway climate change today. Click image below to watch this 55-minute video.

In closing today, for billions of innocent children...let's all work urgently together to promote health, hope and harmony on planet Earth.

Sincerely, Jim

PS: Someone asked me recently why I repeat myself so often in these memos. It's because I'm trying to make sure that each message can be fully understood by all first-time SOS Memo readers.

PS: How can YOU make a difference?

1st: Become a healthy vegan -- making sure that over 80% of your calories are derived from whole, plant-based foods. As such, you will be doing your part in dismantling the leading driver of climate change: global animal agriculture. As a personal bonus, you will get healthier, eliminate most prescription drugs, lose weight and save money at the same time.

2nd: Start "walking the talk" of sustainable living. Let your actions do the talking for your friends and family. My thoughts on that process are in this updated SOS Memo #200 from early 2023, when I moved into my delightful 443 square feet, about halfway between New York and Boston -- on the busiest passenger rail line in the USA.
