WHERE WE HAVE BEEN

Since we last wrote much has happened and there are many things stirring the market.  Three weeks ago, the S&P had just made an intra day all time high only to fall back by the close.  We said then that there was significance in the failure to hold onto the highs.  Since then, the market has shot above the old highs and established new ones only to tumble back below the demarcation line with the ongoing crisis in Crimea.  Yesterday the markets once again rallied to close above those previous highs despite no diplomatic resolution to the Russian annexation of Crimea.  It has been a bit of a roller-coaster (March Madness) the last few weeks.

Despite it all, the bull market trend remains intact and all looks good - or does it?

WHERE WE ARE HEADED

Sam and I read ...  a lot.  One of our primary job functions is to decipher as much of the information that is available, review the charts and make the best decisions we can with the information we have.  It is a time consuming but very interesting process.  It is always striking when advisors/technicians/financial writers we respect have totally different takes on the same market conditions.  That has been much the case for the last couple of years.  One of those writers that we have come to value is Carter Worth (previously of Oppenheimer and now with Sterne Agee).  His most recent commentary dated yesterday listed no fewer than 16 major issues with the current market and detailed them all.  In fact, he noted that space issues precluded him from naming more.  To name just a sampling of his issues - emerging markets are virtually in free fall, copper (often a canary in the coal mine) is down 14% year to date, major banks from Citigroup to JP to Deutsche Bank are all down double digits for the year, gold is rallying, REITS and utilities (defensive sectors are rallying assertively), etc...  You get the idea.  Despite the recent new highs for the S&P and the bull market trend of the US markets, all is not well.  While this situation can persist for longer than any of us may imagine, something has to and will give eventually.  As we have stated here ad nauseam, eventually the economy (the global economy included) and the markets will come together.  Either the economy will strengthen and catch up or the markets will falter and fall to match the underlying fundamentals.  For now, the bull market lives on but that can change in an instant and we are watching closely.  Things to keep an eye on this week are developments on the Russian front, the Fed meeting and press conference on Wednesday and the expiration of options on Friday.  Any of these could lead to surprises in market activity.

HOW WE ARE DOING

We have continued to make small adjustments to our portfolios over the last few weeks.  Removing a couple of funds that were underperforming and replacing with funds that show greater opportunity in the current market environment.  Though fully invested, we remain cautious and wary of the new highs.  Being cautious does not mean we are unable to capitalize on the continuing bull market as we have been able to keep pace with the indices with much less day to day stress.  As always, we will change our approach as market conditions warrant.  In the meantime, we are enjoying the slow grind up this year.

Tidbits
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NOT LINEAR - $1 invested in the S&P 500 stock index on 7/31/96 in a tax-deferred account would have quadrupled in value to $4.02 on a total return basis by 2/28/14 or after 17 years, 7 months. However the original $1 doubled in value to $2.00 by 12/31/98 (i.e., after just 2 years, 5 months) and then it took another 15 years and 2 months for the total to double again to $4.02. This mathematical calculation ignores the ultimate impact of taxes on the account which are due upon withdrawal, is for illustrative purposes only and is not intended to reflect any specific investment. Actual results will fluctuate with market conditions and will vary (source: BAM Research).
COMING BACK - The average US home has increased in value by +14% over the past 2 years, i.e., 2012-13 (source: Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight).
JUST THE STOCKS THEY OWN - The wealthiest 10% of American households (i.e., 10% of 121 million households or 12.1 million households) own 80% of all US stocks. Since the total market capitalization of the US stock market was $23 trillion as of 2/28/14, that suggests that $18.4 trillion of stocks is owned by just 12.1 million households or an average of $1.5 million of equities for every wealthy household (source: Census Bureau).
RADICAL REFORM - The tax reform plan proposed on Wednesday 2/26/14 by House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-MI) has 979 pages of proposed changes that would repeal over 220 sections of the tax code, cutting the size of the tax code by 25% (source: House of Representatives).
STATUS QUO - The Fed meets for 2 days on March 18-19, 2014. If, as expected, they leave short-term interest rates unchanged, it will be their 42nd consecutive meeting with no change in rates (source: Federal Reserve).
For those of you not paying attention to the madness of March, Warren Buffett, Quicken and Yahoo Sports have put a rather large carrot for those that like to fill out NCAA brackets for the upcoming tournament.  For anyone that can pick a perfect bracket - picking each of the 63 tournament games correctly - Buffett and friends will give you one billion dollars.  What are the odds?  According to Buffett the odds are somewhere in the neighborhood of 1 in 9.2 quintillion (that is 9 followed by 18 zeroes).  However the odds increase drastically to 1 in 128 billion if you  actually know something about basketball.  To put those odds in perspective, one would have a better chance of picking your favorite pro baseball team to win the next 7 world series or predicting the correct political party in every presidential election from 2016 to 2060 or flipping a coin and coming up with 37 heads in a row.  Farfetched?  Yes.  But I am saying that you have a chance!  I am reminded of fishing trips with Sam when I was a young boy.  Sauger fishing in 34 degree weather, with a slight drizzle, and wanting desperately to just go home, I would hear "you can't catch a fish with your line in the boat."  My sentiments exactly.  So cast your line and fill out your brackets.  You can do so here.  And remember, we will gladly help you to manage your winnings.  Go Vols!  Let the madness begin.
THE GREATEST COMPLIMENT
In these uncertain times, a trusted financial adviser is more important than ever.  Whatever comes over the upcoming months and quarters, the markets are certain to have lots of volatility and wild swings.  Europe, the US economy and dysfunction in Washington, and continued trouble in Iran and the Middle East to name just a few.  If you have family, friends and neighbors that may benefit from our services, would you please forward this email and/or provide our contact information to them.  We purposefully do not spend time marketing our services so that we can devote all of our resources to managing your assets.  Thank you to all who have provided us referrals - it truly is the greatest compliment you can give us.
Important Disclosure Information
Bills Asset Management ("BAM") composite performance results represent time-weighted actual performance results for continuously managed BAM accounts, which individual accounts BAM believes to be representative of its investment management process (i.e. mutual funds and exchange traded funds) for each specific strategy during the corresponding time period.  The composite performance results reflect the reinvestment of dividends and other account earnings, and are net of applicable account transaction and custodial charges, and the separate fees assessed directly by each unaffiliated mutual fund and exchange traded fund holding that comprised each account, and the maximum investment advisory fee that the accounts would have incurred (by applying BAM's current investment advisory fee as set forth in its current written disclosure statement) during the corresponding time periods.
Please Note:  Past performance may not be indicative of future results.  Therefore, no current or prospective client should assume that future performance will be profitable, equal the performance results reflected, or equal any corresponding historical benchmark index.  The historical index performance results for all historical benchmark indices do not reflect the deduction of transaction and custodial charges, or the deduction of an investment management fee, the incurrence of which would have the effect of decreasing indicated historical performance results.  The historical performance results for all indices are provided exclusively for comparison purposes only, so as to provide general comparative information to assist an individual client or prospective client in determining whether the performance of BAM program meets, or continues to meet, his/her investment objective(s).  A corresponding description of each index is available from BAM upon request.  It should not be assumed that BAM account holdings will correspond directly to any such comparative benchmark index.  The BAM performance results do not reflect the impact of taxes.
For reasons including variances in the investment management fee incurred, market fluctuation, the date on which a client engaged BAM's investment management services, and any account contributions or withdrawals, the performance of a specific BAM client's account may have varied substantially from the indicated portfolio performance results.
In the event that there has been a change in a client's investment objectives or financial situation, he/she/it is encouraged to advise BAM immediately.  Different types of investments and/or investment strategies involve varying levels of risk, and there can be no assurance that any specific investment or investment strategy (including the investments purchased and/or investment strategies devised or undertaken by BAM will be profitable.
