900,000 NC Families Now Receive Fewer SNAP Benefits

To help alleviate financial burdens from COVID, families nationwide have been receiving additional SNAP benefits since 2020, which ranged from $95 to $320 a month. On March 1st, 900,000 North Carolina households lost these benefits, putting them at risk for food insecurity and other financial challenges.

Reduced Financial Stability Leads to Increased Need

With the reduction in benefits and inflation continuing to rise, we are starting to feel the impact on our community. The number of families applying for TABLE services has increased to the point that we now have a waitlist, as our current space does not allow us the capacity to feed more than 800 kids a week.

But, thanks to all of our generous donors we are steadily getting closer to moving into our new space and eliminating the need for a waitlist to serve more kids. We raised DOUBLE our goal for our Spread the Love Challenge! The match brought us to a grand total of nearly $34,000, all of which will go to our Room to Grow Capital Campaign.

Kemisa Kessa

We like to say that TABLE started with "a cookie" because our founder would give cookies to UNC students on Rosemary Street to illustrate the power of giving back. Since then, we've been fortunate to have the support of hundreds of UNC students either as volunteers or interns.


Kemisa joined us as a volunteer in 2021 and is now one of our amazing interns whom we love to see every Thursday in our office. Here she shares what motivated her to give back.

This month, Abi Warmack, TABLE’s Volunteer & Nutrition Education Director, offers some answers to a question she receives a lot, “why don’t families just make healthier choices when it comes to eating?”

“A healthy meal choice is more complicated than choosing to eat more produce or fewer processed foods. One TABLE parent told us that because she has such a limited budget to buy groceries, she only buys foods she knows her children will eat.”
