Find out what the Southern Nevada Addictive Disorders Training Project (SNADTP) is all about!

A Note from our Project Director

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

The Social Services Sector of The Lincy Institute at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) is proud to introduce a new community initiative designed to respond to the needs of Nevada residents. Nevada is second highest in the nation for substance use disorders (SUD) (SAMHSA, 2013). The Southern Nevada Addictive Disorders Training Project is intended to strengthen and further develop the southern Nevada mental and behavioral health workforce by training health professions students (e.g., social workers, counselors, dentists, psychologists, and nurses) in the use of evidence-based screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment (SBIRT).
We feel so fortunate to have the support and visionary guidance of our Council of Directors who are advising us in the implementation of the SBIRT project. The Council members include: Dr. Tracey Green of the UNLV School of Medicine, Ms. Sandra Abdullah, Nevada Health Centers, Dr. Yangcha Soyoung Crabb, UNLV School of Social Work, Ms. Stefaine Maplethorpe, Las Vegas Recovery Center & Westcare, Dr. Ken McKay, Healthy Minds, and Mr. David Robeck, Bridge Counseling Associates.
We are excited about this new endeavor which is funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). We welcome your feedback and participation as we launch the Southern Nevada Addictive Disorders Training Project.

Current Training: Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT)
The historic response to substance use, intervention and treatment has primarily focused on two ends: universal prevention strategies intended to delay or prevent the initiation of use and on providing specialized treatment services for those who meet the criteria for a substance use disorder.

There has been a significant gap in services for those who are in the at-risk population.

SBIRT fills that gap and is appropriate for multiple health care settings, including primary care facilities, ER and trauma departments, community health and social service clinics. In these settings, trained personnel have the opportunity to provide early intervention for individuals at risk for substance use disorders and those already displaying signs and symptoms of addiction before more severe consequences occur.
