From your MBEIC Chair
Happy New Year! SMSDC’s MBEs,

As we open the door into 2019, let us encouragingly walk into the route that we have outlined or that we will be building throughout the year.

Just as we do with our personal and family resolutions, to outline not only our goals but also the route we will take to accomplish them, let us do it passionately for our businesses, if we haven’t done so yet. As we sit down to finish planning this year, we need to make it one of our goals to better put to use our supplier diversity certifications, to seek to further develop ourselves and to effectively market our MBEs.

SMSDC has the same goals in mind; but it is up to us to successfully grow professionally and as a business. How can this be accomplished?

For starters, two minds think better than one. As someone said, this is an example of how 1+1 may not necessarily equal 2. So, let us put our minds together and identify what we as business owners and what our businesses need, for example in the form of trainings. Make a list, then share it with us. Once a list of the most commonly requested trainings is put together by the MBEIC with the help of all MBEs, training sessions or workshops may be brought to RTF meetings or other local/regional events.

SMSDC will help collect this data, as well as expertise among MBEs who would be willing to share their knowledge or provide training. These MBEs, or external Subject Matter Experts if needed, will be invited to offer workshops on these topics. Examples of new or ongoing trainings are:
  • Continuing with Capacity Plus
  • Marketing with the customer in mind- Perhaps to guide us MBEs in preparing better collaterals, a better website or presentations.
  • Cyber security training - To offer best CS practices training for MBEs and their employees.
  • Business Funding
  • Networking 101
  • Others

So, start identifying your training needs and prepare to share them with the MBEIC.

Additionally, we want to know how you are growing or expanding, so if you have any news you would like to share with SMSDC or your RTF, such as or ribbon cutting events, milestones or other achievements where you would like to invite your RTF, please let us know. Please contact Mayra Pena at: mayra@smsdc.org

Also, don’t forget to look into SMSDC’s calendar of events for 2019 and commit to attend and be more involved. There are local events with marginal costs, so take advantage of them. For other events, making an effort, investing in our businesses and actively engaging; makes all the difference in our council and to us as MBEs.

Best wishes and all the success for this year, and I will see you in as many events as possible!

Your SMSDC MBEIC Chair,
Beatriz Fernandez

PLEASE DO NOT Let your
SMSDC Certification Expire!

Check the expiration date on your SMSDC certification. As a courtesy reminder your certification is about to expire, you will receive an e-mail notification from the AdaptOne portal which looks similar to the image above. DO NOT ignore this e-mail. It may to your spam or junk mail.

Once your SMSDC certification expires, ALL MBEs have to complete the entire certification process from the beginning. For those MBEs in the STATE OF TEXAS, in addition to completing the entire certification process all over again, the HUB certification, which enables you to bid on contracts, is no longer valid.  The HUB certification process is only done once a month. This means for those MBEs in the State of Texas, they will now have to wait an entire month for their HUB certification.

Please contact Gabrielle Ramirez at  gabrielle@smsdc.org  for assistance on your SMSDC ReCertification.
