Economic Development Updates from SMIF

Greetings!

Despite having to dig out from more snow, at Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation (SMIF) we are preparing for many events this Spring - from a local foods tradeshow to a regional pitch competition.

We are also excited to share the news about our recent Inclusive and Equitable Communities Grant recipients, as well as news about a new approach to our Prosperity Initiative program so that we can support more entrepreneurs. You'll find information about this and much more in this newsletter.

As always, if you have any questions please contact me at 507-214-7013 or pamb@smifoundation.org.

Loan client spotlight: China House Cafe

In the small town of Truman, Johnny Vuong and his girlfriend, Jialing, opened a restaurant in 2018. They needed support to get started so they reached out to SMIF for an Emerging Entrepreneur Loan. They used the loan on equipment and inventory to build up their kitchen. China House Cafe has quickly become a destination, drawing customers from the surrounding communities.

REV Spotlight: Mapleton

The town of Mapleton joined SMIF's Rural Entrepreneurial Venture (REV) program in 2021. They have made a lot of progress in building capacity for economic development in a short period of time!

Some highlights:

Prosperity Initiative Spotlight: Yoga of Relationship

Amanda Brees from Plainview has been a Prosperity Initiative client since 2022. The free coaching she has received through this program has propelled her business, Yoga of Relationship™, forward.

"This was an incredible investment of time and coaching into my business. I had been watching so many other entrepreneurs stress the importance of coaching, but it was honestly beyond my financial reach. Now, I feel equipped with a vision and direction about how to ground ideas into practical impact.

Now, I feel empowered to make my dreams a reality. I'm already seeing tangible results. As a disabled vet, I thought that was out of reach!"

We are currently seeking applications for the Prosperity Initiative. Apply here.

Building inclusive and economic equity in southern Minnesota

SMIF, in partnership with Region Nine Development Commission (RNDC), recently approved nine grants totaling $146,000 to support inclusive and equitable initiatives in the region.

The Inclusive and Equitable Communities grant opportunity supports communities as they build inclusive, welcoming environments and/or create economic opportunities for diverse populations.

New book focuses on rural economic development

A new book by Don Macke from NetWork Kansas shares strategies to support entrepreneur-led development as the foundation for community economic development, particularly for rural communities.

Don Macke has been a guiding force for our Rural Entrepreneurial Venture (REV) program since it began in 2018. We have seen how these practices produce real results in our own communities. Pam Bishop, SMIF's Vice President of Economic Development, wrote the forward for this book. We are also excited that Minnesota's REV programs are mentioned!
