Truth in Taxation Hearing

At the Regular Business Meeting of the School Board held on August 10, 2022, the School District certified to the Hennepin County Auditor that December 13, 2022 at 6:00 p.m. was the date it had selected for its public hearing and continuation hearing for proposed property taxes payable in 2023. Per state law, the final budget and levy determined must occur after November 2022. The public must also be allowed to speak at the meeting and the meeting shall not be held before 6:00 p.m. As part of the hearing, Patricia Magnuson, Director of Business Services, presented background information on school funding, the District’s budget, and the District’s proposed tax levy for taxes payable in 2023. There was also time for public comment. Click on the link below to view a recording of last night's Truth in Taxation Hearing.

Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council - The first meeting of the 2022-2023 Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council was held on Wednesday, November 30, 2022 and, after meeting virtually for two years, we are happy to announce that we were able to meet in person! The group consists of approximately 40 students grades 5-12 that meet three to four times a year to discuss school district information, events, activities, etc. During this time, we build community and center student voice and experience. At the last meeting, students participated in a robust conversation about the 2023-24 and 2024-25 school year calendars. Representation on the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council continues from fifth grade all the way to high school graduation.

Share The Mic Podcast - Superintendent Osei encouraged the community to tune into the Share the Mic Podcast and provided a preview of the most recent podcast (linked below). Listen to episodes 1 and 2 on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts to hear interviews with students, staff, and community members, conversations about what matters to the SLP community, connections to the SLP Strategic Plan, and more.

10th Grade Europe Trip - June 2023

10th grade AP European History Students Evelyn Bot and Louisa Augustine presented information connected to an international trip to Europe during the summer of 2023. The information included data around interest, the travel dates and package, safety information, educational and experiential-learning information, and fundraising ideas in order to make the trip accessible to all students. A change from previous years for the trip is that it is now available to any 10th grade student and not only those in AP European History as the students believe there is value in a trip such as this for any SLP student. The School Board approved the trip during the evening's Action Agenda.

Policy Development

The School Board reviewed Policy 545 Park Spanish Immersion Admissions, as a first reading. A revision that was made by the Policy Committee in collaboration with the District's Enrollment Center would require families on the waitlist to be notified if their student is enrolled in PSI one month after the lottery closes in order to allow adequate time for families to make plans for their student and family.

The School Board also reviewed and approved the following policies as a second reading:

  • 413 Harassment and Violence
  • 534 School Meals - a new policy required to be adopted by school districts that participate in the national school lunch program per state law

All Board packet materials, including the redline versions of the policies listed above where changes can be tracked, can be found in the meeting's Board packet. Final versions of the policies can be located on the District Policies & Procedures webpage.

Action Items

In addition to the approval of the High School Europe trip, 2023-24 school calendar, and policies, the School Board also approved the following items:

Levy Certification Payable 2023 - The School Board certified the levy for taxes payable in 2023. The school district must submit the completed certification form to the Hennepin County auditor by December 28, 2022. A duplicate form must be

submitted to Minnesota Department of Education.

Combined Polling Places Resolution - The School Board approved the resolution establishing combined polling places for multiple precincts and designating hours during which the polling places will remain open for voting for school district elections not held on the day of a statewide election.
