SLA Launching New Mentorship Program | |
To give library and information service professionals at all stages of their career an opportunity to participate, the SLA Mentorship Pilot Program has three roles accepting applications: mentor, mentee, and peer-to-peer mentor.
- A mentor is an experienced library and information service professional, with at least five years of experience working in the field.
- A mentee is newer to the library and information service profession or a library student and has less than five years of experience working in the field.
- A peer-to-peer mentor is anyone actively working in library and information services in Saskatchewan who would like to build a professional relationship with someone working at another library or organization.
The SLA Mentorship Pilot Program will match you with a mentor, mentee, or peer (depending on the role you apply for) and then you and your match get to decide how and when to virtually connect!
This pilot program will run from October 2024 through May 2025. Applications will open on August 19 and close on September 13, 2024.
The program is open to SLA individual members and is free to join. Applicants will be matched with a mentor, mentee, or peer-to-peer mentor as requested, depending on availability.
Have questions about this pilot program? Contact the SLA office by emailing info@saskla.ca.

Hello everyone,
By the time you read this, my wife and I will have set up all our camping gear and will be comfortably ensconced in South Bay War Veterans Park, about half an hour south of Ile-a-la-Crosse, to attend the annual Metis Nation Saskatchewan Northern Region 3 Family Culture & Engagement Gathering. This will be their fifth annual gathering at South Bay, so to celebrate along at home, say the full name of the event five times fast.
Speaking of culture, congratulations to all recipients of our 2024 Culture Days Program Grants! We’re looking forward to some fantastic programming from our successful applicants during this year’s celebration of culture, running from September 20 to October 13. We’ll be sure to have lots of great Culture Days information to share with everyone in next month’s SLAte, so please watch for that.
And in the meantime, don’t forget about our summer program with the Saskatchewan Roughrider Foundation! The Summer Rider Reading Challenge is open to readers of all ages and runs until August 29, the final day to submit your reading minutes. Weekly reading prizes will be awarded all the way through to the end of the program and the reveal of the Grand Prize Rider Reader Party, which will be awarded to the library branch with the most accumulated reading minutes.
Some interesting trivia for you before I wrap up: Ile-a-la-Crosse is the second oldest settlement in Saskatchewan, having been established as a trading post in 1776, and so in 2026 the northern village will be celebrating its 250th anniversary. Can you imagine, 250 years! That’s about half as old as I feel when our nine-year-old tries to explain to us what a “Skibidi Toilet” is.
Until next time,
James Hope Howard
SLA President

The Fly Into Reading! Contest will run from September 14 to November 1, 2024 and is open to all Kindergarten to Grade 12 students in Saskatchewan.
