In this issue we celebrate our community!

On May 31, Provincetown's own designers, artists, and local businesses and restaurants came together in support of SKIP for the second annual First Look Fashion & Art Show. The event was a resounding success, and we are so grateful for our tiny village with a very big heart! Check out the new products at Respoke, Coffey Men’s, BXclusive, Anchor2Anchor, Mate, and Kilt+.

Among the artists who contributed to the event are several talented SKIP volunteers. Mary, our Chairperson of Volunteers, lets you know below where you can see their work.

Have a wonderful summer!

Artists Among Us

Our SKIP volunteers do many other things besides chop onions and serve soup! Several are artists and have works on display in Ptown this summer.

Friday nights are Gallery Stroll in Ptown, from 7 -9 PM. Many galleries stay open late and have different featured artists each week. Sponsored by the Provincetown Art Gallery Association (PAGA) you can get more information on their website: https://www.provincetownartgalleryassociation.org/

Also, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum is free on Friday nights during gallery stoll, so this is another great place to check out art. https://paam.org/

Following is a list of some of our artists and where their works can be seen.

Rick Bankhead is showing his piece “House on Cold Harbor” at the PAAM Members Open Exhibit. Also, he has donated his piece “On the High Seas” to the SKIP auction at First Look. It was displayed at Plush in Ptown before the auction at the Mary Heaton Vorse house on Friday, May 31.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

FRIAR JOE DeMARTINO

You may recognize Joe DeMartino from around town as a realtor at Gibson Sotheby's. It all started when Joe and his partner bought a house here back in 2001. They began fixing their house and eventually got into condo conversions, so Joe got his real estate license to sell the properties they were working on. He’s been in the real estate business for over 2 decades. Prior to that, Joe earned a masters in Social Work from Catholic University, and worked as a family therapist specializing in couples counseling, addiction, crisis, and sexual identity. And before that, he was Friar Joe!

Joe, the oldest of 7 kids, grew up in Arlington, MA and went to Boston College. In order to pay for his education, he got a job as a cook and housekeeper at Saint Ann University parish. He lived for free, shopped, cleaned and cooked 5 nights a week. After meeting the Franciscan priests there, he decided to join the order of Franciscans of Holy Name Province in New York. Joe stated that he decided to become a Franciscan to hide being gay, but in the end, studying theology helped with self-acceptance and empowered him to live his truth. He credits the “Story of the Fall”, where Eve ate fruit to be like God, as his AHA moment, so he left. Theology helped him come out, Jesus never rejected anyone.

Joe met his husband Jason during the pandemic in what he describes as a “Covid love story”. They married in 2022 and he became an instant dad to his son Rocco. He loves being a dad and said it is a blessing to have “skipped the diaper thing” as Rocco was 5 years old when he came into his life. It’s not easy, but it brings him so much joy as he exclaimed that he’s the “luckiest guy in the world”.

Joe got into cooking by helping his mom in the kitchen. She cooked dessert daily, and was famous for her pies as well as cakes, puddings, and strawberry shortbread. In high school Joe attended a food service program and worked at the Wurst Haus in Harvard Square. After the pastry chef left, Joe was offered the position. He learned a lot, loved it, but it was hard work so he knew he didn’t want to make it his career. He still loves to bake pies.

Joe was taught to give back at a young age and volunteered most of his life. He started serving food to the needy, alongside his dad, at the Pine Street Inn. He also volunteered at the Fernald School for people with intellectual disabilities. He initially volunteered at SKIP on holidays and eventually got himself on the schedule about 6 years ago. At one point during the Covid crisis, he recalls working every day at SKIP for an entire month! When it comes to volunteering, “I get out of it more than I give” he affirmed.

REMEMBRANCE

Jeffrey Walter Johnson, 67, died at his Truro home on January 19, 2024. Jeff vacationed in Truro each summer with his family. He loved the outdoors and spent his days surfing at Ballston Beach. He worked at the Red inn where he went from dishwasher to busboy to waiting tables. Jeff had learned lobstering from his father-in-law, Edgar Francis, on the Pinkie, becoming first mate. After his marriage to Jo (Francis) Johnson, he worked in a variety of Edgar’s businesses as needed: as a driver bringing the mail to and from Buzzards Bay and Hyannis, as a bus driver for Outer Cape and Brewster schools, as a dune taxi driver, and, after the children were born, as a maintenance man for the North Truro Camping Area. But it was on his father-in-law’s lobster boat, the F/V Annie L, that he found his calling. He was fearless. When Hurricane Bob hit in 1991, he and Edgar chose to ride out the storm at sea instead of tying the boat down in the harbor. Jeff took over as captain when his father-in-law fell ill in 1993, and he ran the lobster boat and business until he retired in 2019. Even in retirement, he could not stay off the water. He continued to work a couple of days a week as first mate with the Dolphin Fleet.

Jeff is survived by his daughters, Annie Johnson of Truro and Jaclyn and husband Ian Anderson of New Hampshire and their children, Adeline and Miles, and by his former wife, Jo Francis Johnson.

When Jeff was working, he would stop by the Soup Kitchen in Provincetown for a hot meal. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Soup Kitchen in Provincetown, P.O. Box 538, Provincetown 02657.
