A Fond Farewell to Another SKIP Season

Memorial Day, or the unofficial start of Summer, has gone by and the calendar flips to June where we celebrate the month of Pride. Did you know that Pride began as a result of the police raid of the Stonewall Inn, a popular Greenwich Village gay bar, on June 28, 1969? In reaction, a group of LGBTQ+ people gathered in New York City to demonstrate and fight for their rights. To mark the anniversary one year later, organized demonstrations took place in New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco. The Stonewall raid is a pivotal moment in time that kick-started the gay liberation movement and Pride celebrations around the world.

I feel so lucky to live in a town where we embrace diversity every month of the year, not just June. In this month's issue we're proud to showcase six talented artists, all of whom volunteer at SKIP.

Happy Pride Month!

LORRAINE DePROSPO

"Always in Fashion"

Lorraine DeProspo is a SKIP volunteer who works the serving line on Thursdays. She is represented by OUTERMOST HOME gallery, located at 427 Commercial Street (right next door to the Mews.) The gallery website is outermosthome.com and can also be found on Instagram by searching ‘Outermost Home’. Info on upcoming special events will be posted. Lorraine has donated a painting entitled "ALWAYS IN FASHION" to the “First Look” auction, to benefit SKIP, on June 2nd.

Lorraine has said "Coming from a sculptural background, my painting process is somewhat non-traditional and completely intuitive. I am strongly influenced by sea and sky, and particularly captivated by fog, the mainstay of my imagery, which translates visually for me in minimalist, abstract fashion, absent the need to replicate reality in neither color, shape, or form."

MARTHA FAGAN

Martha Fagan is a SKIP volunteer and a member of the Board of Directors.

Martha states "I am a plein air Impressionist painter and spend as much time outdoors as possible. I have worked with Hilda Neily, Margaret McWethy, Mary Giammarino, Joanette Egeli, and Peter Hocking. I try to capture my impression and feeling in that moment and base my art on the shifting light and color placement. Nature has such variation and intensity of colors and I am in love with the spectacular contrasts of sand, sea, sky and the unique, brilliant light here."

She is a member of PAAM and recently had her very first show Shifting Light exhibit at The Commons. Martha is donating a painting to the “First Look” online auction, to benefit SKIP, which is running now.

JANE KOGAN

Artist Jane Kogan will have a retrospective of her work, running from June 30 through August 20, 2023 at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM). The painting above is "Creation: Goddess Dancing The World" from 1981, photo credit Jim Zimmerman. The two works that follow are also by Jane. They were done earlier and are included in her retrospective.”

"Still Life With Black Vase and Red Cloth" from 1971'.

"The Quartet" from 1965.

THOM MARKEE

Thom Markee is a SKIP volunteer, painter, actor and hair stylist. He is having a show at The Commons from June 28 through July 9th. The opening reception is Friday June 30th. Titled “Berserk”, the show will display Political Pop Art.

ANDI SAWYER

Cover of January/February issue of Art Scan magazine

Andrea Sawyer (Andi) has a solo show at Seashore Point, titled “12x12x12x12” that will run until June 25th. It features 144 12x12 oils on canvas she did in one year during the isolation of the COVID pandemic, a goal she set herself to keep productive. She’s delighted to be able to show the body of work in its entirety.

Andi was honored to be the cover story for the Jan - Feb 2023 issue of Artscope Magazine - “Andrea Sawyer’s Provincetown Love Letters”, featuring 12 large oils on canvas she painted of interiors of her late friend, Ilona Royce Smithkin’s remarkable atelier on Commercial Street. Three of these were recently shown in an exhibit for Women’s History Month at the University of Rhode Island in Providence.

Andrea Sawyer is known for her ability to capture dramatic light, shadows and mood. Originally from Maine, Andi was drawn to Provincetown for its artist colony and for its light. Surrounded on three sides by water, Provincetown has a light that, as Andi says, "transforms everything into something magical.”

BOARD SPOTLIGHT

MARTHA FAGAN

Martha Fagan is very happy to call Provincetown home!  She and her husband Jim moved to the East End in 2019.  A native to CT for nearly 50 years, she grew up in Redding, yet spent every summer in Truro or Eastham either vacationing with her family as a child, working as a young adult, or bringing her own family. She graduated Keene State College in New Hampshire with a B.S. in Business/Marketing and worked in the menswear business in New York City when she met her husband Jim 37 years ago. While raising their four children in Weston, Martha tapped into her creative side through numerous jobs as a stylist for American lifestyle magazine Country Home, co-founder of an antique shop, and owner of an organic chicken and vegetable farm.

She always had her hand in volunteering locally. She helped in the High School Career Center for seven years, served in the local soup kitchen and was a food rescuer for Food Rescue US, an organization diverting food waste to provide meals for people in need.

It wasn’t until her last child headed out the door that Martha pursued art. She earned a certificate in Fine Arts at Parsons School of Design and took her very first plein air oil workshop in 2016 with the Cape School of Art. Since moving to Provincetown four years ago, she spends as much time outdoors as possible and has sought teachers who have had the influence of Henry Hensche’s teachings and those who base their art on light and color placement. “I try to capture my feeling in that moment, observing the shifting effects of light and color. I am in love with the spectacular contrasts of sand, water, sky and brilliant light here.” She is a member of PAAM and recently had her very first show Shifting Light exhibit at The Commons.

When Martha first arrived in Ptown, she immediately started volunteering with SKIP and has been a Board Member since 2021. She is Fundraising Chairperson as well as serves on HR and Volunteer committees. She has also been an ASGCC volunteer (Aids Support Group of Cape Cod) since 2019. She enjoys long walks and biking, time with family and friends on their Boston Whaler, looking for treasures at flea markets, and Antigua time! And best of all, recently Martha has had daughters celebrate marriages as well as welcomed two beautiful grandchildren to her growing family. Fun fact, her grandson was born on SKIP Souper Saturday, Dec 3 2023. Literally Martha received the home birth news on her way to set up for the event that early morning and she says the whole day is one big blur!! Word on Commercial Street spread fast – Baby Boy Bathtub Birth!! Martha feels incredibly fortunate to live in, love, and contribute to this wonderful town - and to have made some special friends at SKIP!
