SJPLF in the News

San JosĂ© Public Library Foundation (SJPLF) donor Margaret Ma was recently featured on NBC Bay Area for her gift through SJPLF to make the digital archives of the San JosĂ© Mercury News available to all San JosĂ© Public Library (SJPL) cardholders. Margaret made the donation in honor of her late mother, Susan Renzel Carter, who grew up visiting the library. Margaret’s gift was also featured in SJ Metro!

Read to Raise Success

This summer, dozens of San JosĂ© readers participated in Read to Raise, a fundraiser that directly supports the Library’s Summer Learning program. Summer Learning encourages continued reading over the summer break to help prevent the “summer slide” effect — a loss of up to two months of academic progress. Read to Raise participants were sponsored by their friends and family as they logged their reading with the chance to win cool prizes. Nearly $3,000 was raised to support SJPL's Summer Learning program.

Through a partnership with SJPL and SJPLF, hundreds of youth attended free Coding5K camps this summer to gain exposure to STEM programs and learn how to code.

One such camp was a three-day workshop on app design and development specifically targeting girls due to their low representation in STEM programs.

The series emphasized app development and coding, created with the hope of fostering a comfortable and welcoming environment to encourage young girls to explore coding as a career option.

Following her time at a Coding5K camp, one student remarked, “coding isn’t as hard as I thought and it’s actually really fun!”

Check out our video to see the camp in action!
