Worship Music in Advent and Christmas
At St. John’s, two of our most beloved liturgies during the Advent and Christmas seasons take the form of services of Lessons & Carols. Both of these Occasional Services have roots at King’s College Chapel in Cambridge, England. They were codified from pre-existing models into the forms we know today by the twentieth-century Anglican priest and academic Eric Milner-White, during his tenure as Dean of King’s College. Milner-White believed that more imaginative worship was needed by the Church of England, and he undertook to design these services using a combination of carefully selected scripture readings that would be interspersed with various choral and congregational hymns and carols. Interestingly, the Christmas Nine Lessons & and Carols service came first, in 1918, and influenced the creation of the similar Advent Lessons & Carols service sixteen years later, in 1934.
In honor of the 200th anniversary of the founding of Jacksonville coming up in 2022, we have commissioned a carol by composer Byron Adams. This carol, A Christmas Prayer, written for choir and organ will premiere at the Festival Nine Lessons & Carols. Adams is a JU graduate and Professor of Composition at the University of California, Riverside. Please join us on New Year's Eve as we gather to celebrate the arrival of the Messiah through scripture and singing!

Episcopal Relief & Development seeks donations to aid those impacted by tornadoes
Episcopal Relief & Development is working to help thousands of families who lost everything as a result of last week's devastating tornadoes in Kentucky, Arkansas, Illinois, and Tennessee.
The tornadoes that swept the mid-Mississippi Valley were the most powerful seen in a decade, shredding community infrastructure, killing at least 90 people and leaving thousands without their homes. From ER&D: Please help us work with the local partners and dioceses in need of our assistance to provide relief and support. Make an urgent tax-deductible donation to Episcopal Relief & Development today.
Dozens of people were feared dead, and communities across the Midwest and South were digging through rubble last Saturday after a string of unseasonably powerful storms and tornadoes swept across six states overnight.
Gov. Andy Beshear of Kentucky said that at least 70 had been killed, and the state’s death toll could increase to more than 100. The state was hit by four tornadoes, he said, including one that stayed on the ground for more than 200 miles.
In Mayfield, Ky., about 110 people had huddled inside a candle-making factory when a tornado ripped through it. About 40 people were rescued, but Gov. Beshear said he believed “dozens” had been killed there. At a news briefing last Saturday, shaken local officials said they were struggling to comb through the debris amid blocked roads and lost water and electrical service.
“We are in contact with Episcopal dioceses in the affected areas,” said Katie Mears, Senior Director, U.S. Disaster Program, Episcopal Relief & Development. “Our partners are assessing the needs in their communities created by the storms. We stand ready to assist in the coming days and weeks.” Please pray for the people impacted by the deadly tornadoes.

SJC Afghan Apartment Update
Thank You, Thank You, St. John's Cathedral!
Our Afghan family has arrived in Jacksonville! They will be settled in a three-bedroom apartment that we are ready to set up as soon as there is availability. Understandably, many of the families who barely escaped the Taliban wish to maintain their anonymity. We hope to have a family photo, and possibly meet the family but have no word yet. Our family consists of two parents, one daughter (age 20), and four sons (ages 18, 16, 11 and 8). They are currently in an Airbnb where they have already begun the challenging orientation process to American life with the assistance of the Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement Agency (CC).
SJC parishioners and friends not only donated essential items of good quality, but also monetary donations that allowed us to shop garage sales and thrift stores for needed items. A little paint or refinishing can make scratched-up furnishings look new again! Since needs vary by family, there are always duplications and gaps in donation items. Our four boys will sleep in a double set of bunk beds purchased by CC, while other families will enjoy a sofa, dining room set, and numerous other items for which we had duplications donated by SJC parishioners. Please keep the donations coming as CC will be resettling 50 families over the next year.
