Model UN Club Competes at Vermont Commons School


On Saturday, St. Johnsbury Academy's Model UN Club attended a conference at the Vermont Commons School. Orleans Germond '27, Aliah Hale '26, and Poppy Shattuck '27 were delegates on the Barbieland Committee, and Steve Koh '26 and Chenlin Shi '26 were delegates on a committee simulating an invasion of Taiwan by China. Aliah Hale and Steve Koh were awarded Honorable Mentions for exceptional contributions to their respective committees. Orleans Germond was recognized as the best delegate on the Barbieland Committee.

Science Olympiad Team Competes in Massachusetts


The Science Olympiad Team traveled to UMass-Amherst recently. Against 35 other teams, including the top teams from Massachusetts, the team finished just out of the medal range. Among the notable accomplishments are top ten finishers: Ava Massoni and Donley Johnson earning 6th in Fossils and 11th in Dynamic Planet. Ava Massoni and Lucas Wagner earned 7th in Ecology. Lucas Wagner and Charlie Peralez earned 7th in Fermi Questions. Mat Zhylkin and Elana Kosmas earned 9th in Chem Lab. In Anatomy and Physiology, Mat Zhylkin and Paulie Xin finished 10th. 


Science Olympiad is headed to the state tournament the first weekend April!

Suyeon Kim Awarded Commendation in John Locke Institute’s Global Essay Competition


Junior Suyeon Kim, of Jeju, South Korea, was recently awarded a Commendation in the Theology category of the John Locke Institute’s Global Essay Competition. Suyeon attended the commendation ceremony in London, England in late 2023.

 

The John Locke Institute’s website offers some background on the organization: “The John Locke Institute is an independent educational organization that works to embolden the best and brightest students to become more academically ambitious and more intellectually adventurous. Through our various programs - residential courses, revision seminars, essay competitions, and special events – we inspire students to aim high and we equip them with the skills they need in order to achieve their goals. The Institute is named in honor of the eminent seventeenth century Oxford philosopher, John Locke.” The John Locke Institute also offers competitive summer programs at Princeton University, Oxford University and in Washington, D.C. and Singapore.

Clear River Review


This year's edition of the Clear River Review will be released in April and as we get closer, this newsletter will include a sampling of the student-created poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and visual submissions showcased in the publication. This week's submission is a silver gelatin photograph titled Farmer’s Playground, by junior Django Farlice.

All students planning to play a spring sport must complete this registration form before the start of the season on March 25th to be eligible to try out/practice. This includes students who played a fall and/or winter sport.

Following the Meet the Coaches, the Student Athletic Advisory Council will host a College Recruiting Info Night in Fuller Hall where you will hear from athletic directors, guidance, and current SJA recruits on topics such as scholarships, division differences, and coach contact timelines. COMMUNITY UPDATES

April Testing Dates and the Eclipse


Registration for the April 8th PSAT-10 and SAT is now closed. These tests will be administered on April 8. The tests will begin at 8 a.m. When students complete their testing, they may leave campus. If you have questions about the PSAT-10 or SAT, please contact Emma Carr.


Students not taking the PSAT-10 or the SAT do not have classes that day.  


Students will have the opportunity to view the eclipse on campus during the afternoon of April 8th. Please look for information in the coming weeks on how to sign up. Advanced registration is required due to the anticipated volume of traffic in town.

Yearbook Sales


The 2024 edition of The Lamp, SJA's student yearbook, is available for pre-sales through this link. Books will also be available for sale on Spring Day through the Alumni Office.


REMINDER: Seniors will receive a yearbook as part of the Senior Graduation Package.


Senior families wishing to purchase an ad to celebrate their graduates can do so here. The deadline for ads is Monday, March 25.

AROUND CAMPUS

Students in Mr. Jeff Roberts' Heating and Plumbing class are gaining experience by installing ductwork in the workshop.

Mrs. Prevost's Photo 2 students have been busy pouring over contact sheets and studying negatives to select their strongest images to print.

Members of the Robotics Team are putting the final touches on their robot for this weekend's Pine Tree District FIRST Robotics Competition Qualifying Event in Lewiston, Maine.

Mr. Palmer's woodworking students are crafting custom mallets for their latest project.

Mr. Buhner's classes took advantage of Friday's beautiful weather to get outside.
