Examining the Factors Affecting Safety Performance in Industries
Implementing safety and health practices in the industry is paramount for maintaining uninterrupted and stable operations. Consequently, industries establish safety performance systems to monitor status and ensure the robustness of management and integrity of safety-related tasks. With insights into the significance of diverse factors for safety performance, companies can consider additional perspectives and prioritize key elements to seek continuous improvement in safety and health. The survey was designed after the Health and Safety (cultural) Diagnostic Tool (HSDT) developed by the United Kingdom Health and Safety Executive. Statistical assessment techniques, including one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Kruskal–Wallis test, and Dunn’s test, were employed to evaluate the importance and influence of various factors. The study reveals that the care level of employers holds the highest statistical importance in safety performance, with higher levels of care correlating with more favorable safety outcomes. Furthermore, the presence of in-house safety professionals significantly contributes to improved safety outcomes.

A Model for Assessing and Managing Workplace Ergonomics Risk Factors

Ergonomic risk factors exist in almost every workplace, contributing to 33% of all disabling occupational incidents and 40% of the direct workers’ compensation costs annually (Liberty Mutual, 2019; Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2020). In addition to worker injuries, such risk factors negatively impact quality, production, service efficiency, employee morale, and overall operational success.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Safety

The National Safety Council (NSC), in partnership with and funded by Lloyds Register Foundation, seeks to address the critical challenge of DEI by embarking on a first-of-its-kind examination of the state of DEI and safety.

A synthesis of literature review, surveys, interviews, and stakeholder engagement contributed to developing a model for DEI-informed safety. The intent of this model is not to be all-encompassing, but to provide a framework and language to describe the various levels of observed maturity, motivation, engagement, understanding and best practices related to DEI and safety.
