New Jersey Marks Disability Pride Month in July
|
|
Disability Pride Month is an annual observance promoting visibility and awareness of the positive pride felt by individuals with disabilities. Celebrated in July, Disability Pride initially started as a day of celebration in 1990—the year the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law. That same year, Boston held the first Disability Pride Day. The first official celebration of Disability Pride Month occurred in July 2015, which also marked the 25th anniversary of the ADA. Since then, cities across the country have celebrated disability pride month with parades and other festivities.
Scott Chesney, who also joined us last year as a SHA Conference keynote speaker, provides the following video message in honor of Disability Pride Month on behalf of the New Jersey Department of Human Services.
In New Jersey, Alliance Center for Independence (ACI) has proudly hosted and organized the New Jersey Disability Pride Parade and Celebration since 2011. Postponed in recent years due to COVID-19, ACI hopes to host the event under a new name, Disability Pride in the Park, in coming years.

New 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline Starts July 16th
|
|
Starting July 16, 2022, New Jerseyans will be able to use 988 to reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. 988 will be available for call, text, or chat to those experiencing a mental health-related or suicidal crisis, or those looking to help a loved one through a crisis. The existing Lifeline number, 1-800-273-8255, will continue to be available.
The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is available to persons of all abilities, including those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). The Division of Developmental Disabilities, and other governmental Departments, have worked with 988 to provide disability specific service information and other available resources. This will equip 988 to meet the presenting need of the caller and, as appropriate, connect them with other appropriate resources depending on their unique needs.

Freddie Mac Will Factor On-Time
Rent Payments Into Loan Purchase Decisions
|
|
Freddie Mac (the government-sponsored enterprise, or GSE) announced it will start considering on-time rent payments as part of the GSE’s loan purchase decisions, with the goal of increasing homeownership opportunities for first-time homebuyers. With the borrower’s permission, lenders and brokers will be able to submit bank account data to Freddie Mac’s Loan Product Advisor (the GSE’s automated underwriting tool) to identify 12-months of on-time rent payments for inclusion in the tool’s assessment of loan qualification for purchase by Freddie Mac. This policy change aims to help potential borrowers (those who have been unable to access homeownership due to lacking a credit score or having a limited credit history) access homeownership by building the credit score needed to access home lending. Last year, Freddie Mac announced an initiative to help renters build credit by encouraging operators of Freddie Mac-financed multifamily properties to report on-time rental payments to the three major credit-reporting bureaus.

Jersey City Proposes Amendments To Enhance Inclusionary Zoning & Affordable Housing Development
|
|
The city has announced that the “overlay” they are introducing would require developments to build affordable housing at 10 to 15 percent of the total number of units in a development. In return, it would incentivize developers to create affordable units by allowing extra density, according to City Planning Director Tanya Marione.
The city also said that the overlay would also allow developers to seek approval before the Planning Board instead of going to the City Council for rezoning or the Zoning Board of variances. (Hudson Reporter, July 11, 2022)

Free Online Tool Bolsters Efforts to Help Individuals Find Trusted and
High-Quality Addiction Treatment Options Across New Jersey
ATLAS®, or Addiction Treatment Locator, Assessment, and Standards Platform, at www.TreatmentATLAS.org, offers an easy-to-use dashboard to allow individuals with substance use disorder and their loved ones to search for and compare participating programs using criteria such as location, services offered, and insurance accepted so they can find the best treatment for their unique needs. ATLAS has been made possible in New Jersey through a partnership with Human Services and funding from Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey. ATLAS builds on existing efforts by New Jersey to connect individuals and families to treatment through the 1-844-ReachNJ helpline.
ATLAS is fully available in English and Spanish and has several unique features including:
- Feedback from other patients once a minimum threshold of 20 responses for the facility is met, updated every 24 hours;
-
An expert-approved Addiction Treatment Needs Assessment, created in collaboration with the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and OpenBeds, to help guide the treatment search based on the individual’s needs and severity;
- The ability to search and filter using criteria such as location, services offered and insurance accepted, as well as the opportunity to compare facilities.

nTIDE June 2022 Jobs Report: Employment Reaches
All-Time High For People With Disabilities
|
|
East Hanover, NJ – Employment increased slightly from May to June for people with disabilities, reaching an all-time high. The monthly increase in the labor force participation rate for people with disabilities may reflect their need for additional income because of inflation according to today’s National Trends in Disability Employment – Monthly Update (nTIDE), issued by Kessler Foundation and the University of New Hampshire’s Institute on Disability (UNH-IOD).
Comparing year-to-year data, as the economy recovers from the effects of the pandemic, people with disabilities have outpaced people without disabilities with their employment now exceeding pre-pandemic levels.
