San Francisco CASA recognizes the remarkable resilience of youth in foster care, who often face challenges that no child should ever endure. We are grateful to the social workers, attorneys, resource parents and most of all YOU - CASA Advocates. Thank you for providing care and support to your assigned youth through the highs and the lows. We also acknowledge and honor parents for their determined efforts to overcome adversity, striving to safely reunite with their loved ones.

Youth Voice Survey

SFCASA values the voices of the youth we serve and we want to hear how we are doing! All youth 8 years and older who have been matched with a CASA for more than six months will receive a postcard soon with a QR code they can scan to take the 8 question survey. Advocates will also get the postcard – Please share and encourage your assigned youth to participate!

NOTE: you should not be present when they fill out the survey - we want them to feel free to share honest feedback. If they need support, please arrange for their parent, caregiver or PSW to help them. Thank you!

Over the course of nearly two years, Marcus consistently demonstrated patience, resilience, and kindness, embodying the essence of what it means to truly show up for someone. Despite the challenges encountered along the way, Marcus persevered, never faltering in his dedication to his young person's well-being. COUNTERTRANSFERENCE and SELF-AWARENESS

W/ Dr. Natalia Estassi

This training will discuss countertransference, a term Freud founded, and how it can both positively and negatively impact our work as providers. Discussed will be the many environmental and social stressors we are facing today, this includes the COVID-19 pandemic and the racism pandemic, which will impact us in various ways. As a CASA, in hearing the losses and hardships of your youth, one is often triggered, especially in these difficult times. Explore the importance of self-awareness to best guarantee one can remain effective as a provider. Learn ways to cultivate self-awareness and the importance of our boundaries. CCN - CASA COMMUNITY NETWORK HUDDLE

Please join us for our first in person huddle in our new offices! Let’s spend time supporting each other and building community as we talk about our own well being as CASAs, how we set and keep boundaries and any challenges we are facing.

The CASA Community Network (CCN) is a network for CASAs, organized by CASAs and hosted by CASAs. We share, lean in and on, and support each other through events, such as The Huddle. Sometimes we learn from expert guest speakers in continuing education sessions. In The Huddle, we learn from experts – ourselves – we have collective years of expertise among us. We are a network of support – who better understands the ups, the downs, the joys, the challenges than we do.

CONSENT AND BODY SAFETY FOR TEENS WORKSHOP

W/ Vanessa Kellam of Health Connected.

This training is strongly encouraged for all CASAs serving youth 12 years and older. We will explore how to support your assigned youth around consent and bodily autonomy (or the potential lack of it), as well as helpful strategies to help young people articulate their boundaries. Talking about consent and body safety is a key part of the CASA role and we cannot assume that someone else is talking with them about how to stay safe.

ADULTING AND ACCOUNTABILITY - HOW TO SUPPORT

TRANSITIONAL AGED YOUTH (TAY) WORKSHOP

With Joey Hess

It is so common that TAY youth, who have only experienced adults telling them what to do have a hard time transitioning to setting their own authentic goals and then working towards them. It is also normal for CASAs serving TAY youth to feel frustrated when observing their lack of initiative and follow-through.

Join us for a unique opportunity to take a deep dive into the Harm Reduction lens with a focus on using Motivational Interviewing to have deeper conversations with TAY about goals, accountability, responsibility, and more.
