TERMS OF THE MONTH

Financial Aid Terms

FAFSA - Free Application for Federal Student Aid - The application for federal aid that colleges and universities use to develop individual students' aid packages. Applicant answers are used to establish the Estimated Family Contribution

Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) - The amount, according to the FAFSA, a family is able to contribute to a student's cost of college attendance.

FSA ID (Federal Student Aid ID): An username and password combination used as a login and electronic signature for the FAFSA. Students and parents must each have their own FSA ID.

CSS Profile: The CSS Profile is an additional financial application required by certain colleges and universities for consideration for financial aid.

To view a list of schools that require the CSS Profile, click here.

The CSS Profile is now free for families making up to $100,000 a year. Otherwise, the initial application to complete the application is $25. This covers the cost of the application itself and the cost of sending the results to one college. For every additional college that is added, the additional expense is $16 per college.

VASA (Virginia Application for State Aid)

- An application for students who are not eligible to file the FAFSA. Applications are assessed for aid to VA public institutions ONLY. Find out more HERE.
