THE SFA SCHOLARSHIP OPENS NOVEMBER 1!


The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria Application will open on Wednesday, November 1st!


By completing the SFA application, students are considered for the 200+ scholarships managed by the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria. Be sure to apply at sfa.awardspring.com by the application deadline of January 31st

Eligibility requirements:

Open to all graduating seniors with a 2.0+ GPA by the end of their junior year


Open to all qualifying students, regardless of citizenship/residency status


Scholarship can be used at any accredited college or career/technical education program



Required application components:

Two essays

One resume

One letter of recommendation

For all need-based applicants: 2024-25 FAFSA Submission Summary (or alternative documentation due by March 1st).

MAJOR OF THE MONTH


Anthropology


Anthropologists and archeologists study the origin, development, and behavior of humans. They examine the cultures, languages, archeological remains, and physical characteristics of people in various parts of the world.


Anthropologists and archeologists typically qualify for positions with a master’s degree in anthropology or archeology. Master’s degree programs usually take 2 years to complete and include field or laboratory research.


Those with a bachelor’s degree in anthropology or archeology and experience gained through an internship or field school may work as field or laboratory technicians or research assistants. (Occupational Outlook Handbook)

The SFA is here for you all year long!

The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria, a 501(c)(3) organization, was established in 1986 by concerned citizens to help academically qualified students with financial need from Alexandria City Public Schools afford postsecondary education.


Through its relationship with the community, the mission of The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria is to encourage and assist the students of Alexandria City Public Schools by providing them with necessary resources to access and complete a college, technical or career program of postsecondary education.  

The Scholarship Fund Office is open from 8–4:30pm Monday through Friday. Mrs. Miller and Ms. Rodriguez are available to meet with students via appointment or walk-ins.

Do you know about Micro-Scholarships?


Micro Scholarships, Such as RaiseMe, allow students to accumulate scholarship awards during high school based on their accomplishments and transfer that money as grant awards when they enroll in partner colleges. Students can begin developing their profile and earning scholarship funds in 9th grade.


Several VA universities are RaiseMe partners, including VA Tech, Hollins, Emory & Henry, and Randolph-Macon. Over 300 colleges participate in the RaiseMe movement.

James Madison Centennial Scholars Program

Description: The Centennial Scholars Program (CSP) at James Madison University provides financial support to talented first-generation Pell Grant-eligible students from the Commonwealth of Virginia. This highly competitive award is open to incoming first-year and transfer students as well as current JMU students. Students who are accepted into CSP (referred to as "Centennials") are awarded a combination of federal, state, and institutional grants totaling the cost of in-state tuition, mandatory fees, housing, and meals. Centennials must meet program-specific need-based eligibility requirements in future years to maintain the full value of the award. To be considered eligible for the Centennial Scholars Program, all applicants must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) no later than February 01, 2024, be subsequently deemed eligible for the Federal Pell Grant, qualify for in-state tuition, and

demonstrate exemplary academic performance.



Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Community College Transfer Scholarships (opens Oct. 5)

Description: The Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship is a highly selective scholarship for the nation’s top community college students seeking to complete their bachelor’s degrees at four-year colleges or universities. Each Cooke Scholar has access to generous financial support for two to three years, college planning support, ongoing advising, and the opportunity to connect with the thriving community of fellow Scholars.


Akerson Family Foundation Scholarship

Sponsor: Akerson Family Foundation

Deadline: March 31, 2023

Amount: $10,000/year (up to four years)

Description: The Akerson Family Foundation Scholarship is a four-year renewable scholarship worth up to $40,000 awarded annually to a select group of first-generation, college-bound seniors from Arlington (VA) Public Schools, Alexandria City (VA) Public Schools, or Fairfax County (VA) Public Schools who demonstrate strong academic skills, financial need, and community/school engagement.

Applicant must be a high school senior graduating from Arlington Public Schools, Alexandria City Public Schools, or Fairfax County Public Schools in Spring 2024 with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25 (at the end of junior year) and applying for college admission/enrollment in Fall 2024 at any four-year, accredited college/university OR any two-year community college (excluding any for-profit schools). Applicant must be a first-generation college student.

For purposes of the AFF scholarship, a first-generation student will be defined as a student whose parents have not earned an undergraduate degree in the United States. Applicant must be FAFSA Eligible. Student must have an Estimated Family Contribution (SAI) of no more than $15,000. When choosing scholarship winners, factors to be considered include financial need, academic achievement, scholarship application answers, letters of recommendation, school/community engagement, and candidate interview. Applicant must submit a completed Akerson Family Foundation Scholarship application by the deadline of MARCH 1, 2024 deadline. Finalists must participate in an interview with AFF staff and/or board members.


Louis Goaziou Lodge #1953 Scholarship Program*

Deadline: March 31

Amount: $500

Description: The Louis Goaziou Lodge #1953 Scholarship Program is open to all high school seniors currently enrolled in a Washington, DC, or surrounding metro area high school in the 2023-24 school year who are planning to attend an accredited U.S. college or other educational program starting in the 2024-25 school year. Applicants must take and pass a quiz about Freemasonry in the history of the United States and today.

Allied Health Scholarships

Description: AlliedTravelCareers.com is awarding one (1) $1,000 allied health scholarship to undergraduate, master, and Ph. D. allied health students for the Spring 2024 semester, and one (1) $1,000 allied health scholarship to undergraduate allied health students for the Fall 2024 semester. Applicants are asked to write a compelling essay describing their personal story, what has inspired them to pursue an allied health career, and how this scholarship will help them achieve their goals.


CarBrain Scholarship

Description: Scholarship is open to high school seniors and current college freshmen, sophomores, or juniors in the United States. Applicant must submit an essay on one of two given topics related to motor vehicles.


Chick-fil-A Community Scholars

Sponsor: Chick-fil-A, Inc.

Amount: $25,000

Closing Date: November 1, 2023

Description: Scholarship is open to undergraduate or graduate students or students planning to enroll in undergraduate or graduate study at an accredited two- or four-year college, university or vocational-technical school for the 2024-2025 academic year. Applicant must have shown demonstrated care through community-service in the twelve (12) months prior to application.


Congressional App Challenge

Sponsor: Internet Education Foundation

Amount: Varies

Closing Date: November 1, 2023

Description: Challenge is open to U.S. students in middle school or high school who live in a Congressional district that is participating (check website for details). Applicant must create any type of app they like on any platform they like.


Young Writers Awards

Sponsor: Bennington College

Amount: Up to $500

Closing Date: November 1, 2023

Description: Students in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades can enter in one of the following categories: poetry (a group of three poems), fiction (a short story or one-act play), or nonfiction (a personal or academic essay. All entries must be original work and sponsored by a high school teacher).


Chick-fil-A Community Scholars

Deadline: November 1

Amount: $25,000

GPA Requirement: 3.0

Description: Scholarships are awarded based on student academic success, community service and financial need. The Chick-fil-A Community Scholars also participate in a mentoring and leadership development program. Students must be a resident in the US, Puerto Rico, or Canada and enroll in a higher education program for the 2024-25 academic year.

Prudential Emerging Visionaries Scholarship 

Sponsor: Prudential

Amount: $15,000

Closing Date: November 2, 2023 

Description: $15,000 maximum scholarships open to any visionaries between the ages of 14-18 taking on today’s toughest financial and societal challenges. Participants must be legal residents of the United States or Puerto Rico.


VMFA Scholarship 

Sponsor: Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

Amount: varies 

Closing Date: November 3, 2023 at 5 PM

Description: $2,000 - $6,000 arts scholarships for Virginia college students. Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States, as well as residents of Virginia, for at least 24 consecutive months to the deadline.


NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing (AiC)

Sponsor: National Center for Women & Information Technology

Amount: Varies

Closing Date: November 6, 2023

Description: Scholarship is open to U.S. high school and college women with an interest in computing and technology. College students must attend an NCWIT Academic Alliance institution and major or minor in computing.


Herb Block Foundation

Sponsor: Herb Block Foundation

Description: $8,000 maximum scholarships for students attending community college in the DMV area. Last-dollar scholarships to be applied for the spring semester. Scholarship is open to students who are U.S. citizens, permanent residents, DACA recipients, or students who qualify for in-state tuition under the Maryland or VA Dream Act (also known as VA Tuition Equity Provision). Applicants must be primary residents of Washington DC, Maryland (Montgomery or Prince George’s County), or Virginia (the cities of Alexandria or Falls Church, or counties of Arlington or Fairfax). Applicants must be attending Northern Virginia Community College, Montgomery College, Prince George’s Community College, or the Community College of the District of Columbia.


Regeneron Science Talent Search

Description: Science research competition for high school seniors; awards up to $250,000.


Youth Awards

Sponsor: Hispanic Heritage Foundation

Description: Award is open to Latino high school seniors who excel both inside and outside the classroom, who have at least a 3.0 GPA and are Permanent residents, DACA, U.S. Citizens, or eligible non-citizens.


Rollins Scholarship*

GPA Requirement: N/A

Description: Scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors based on their compelling stories about their lives, their intended field of study/career and how they will impact the world. Applicants must submit an essay of at least 500 words.


Concerto Competition

Sponsor: United States Marine Band

Amount: Up to $2,500

Closing Date: November 15, 2023

Description: Competition is open to high school musicians (grades 9-12) enrolled during the 2023-2024 academic year. Performers of woodwind, brass, or percussion instructions may apply. Applicant must select one of the works listed on the application for their instrument and submit an audio recording of their performance accompanied by piano, band, or orchestra.


Robertson Scholars Leadership Program

Sponsor: Robertson Foundation

Amount: varies (full scholarship to Duke/UNC)

Closing Date: November 15, 2023 

Description: Full scholarship available to students who are applying (and eventually matriculate) to Duke University and/or University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Only for students who are currently high school seniors or students taking a gap year who have not previously matriculated to a college or university other than UNC Chapel Hill or Duke University.

Description: Award is open to classical instrumentalists, vocalists, and composers between the ages of 8 and 18 who have not yet entered college during the 2024-2025 academic year.


Digital Marketing Scholarship

Description:  Scholarship is open to high school seniors and current undergraduate students who are majoring in (or plan to major) in a field related to digital marketing. Applicant must submit an essay on a given topic related to digital marketing.


Jack Kent Cooke College Scholarship

Description: $40,000 per year renewable scholarship open to high school seniors with a minimum, cumulative unweighted 3.5+ GPA and a family income no greater than $95,000. Applicants must intend to enroll in an accredited four-year college or university beginning in fall 2024.


Frito-Lay Community Builders Scholarship*

Deadline: November 20

Amount: $25,000

GPA Requirement: 2.5

Description: The scholarship aims to honor students from all backgrounds who improve their communities and provide them with additional financial assistance to alleviate the burden of higher education costs. Applicants must be high school seniors (or current higher education students) who will enroll in a higher education program for the 2024-25 academic year.


Immigrant Student Scholarship

Sponsor: Law Office of Jae Lee

Amount: $1,000

Closing Date: November 21, 2023

Description: Scholarship is open to students currently enrolled in or accepted for admission to a college, university, or graduate program who are either first- or second-generation immigrants living in the United States. Applicant must submit an essay or video sharing their family’s immigration story.


Smithsonian Photo Contest

Sponsor: Smithsonian Magazine

Amount: $500

Closing Date: November 30, 2023

Description: $500 - $2,500 photo contest open to students 18 or older.


Unigo Education Matters Scholarship

Amount: $5,000

GPA Requirement: N/A

Description: Scholarship open to students who are at least 14 years old and legal U.S. residents. Applicants must submit an essay about why education and college matter.


Auger & Auger Disabled Scholarship

Sponsor: Auger & Auger Law Firm

Description: $1,000 essay scholarship is available for high school seniors or current undergraduate students with a minimum GPA of 2.8. 


Dr. Juan Andrade Scholarship for Young Hispanic Leaders

Sponsor: United States Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI)

Amount: Up to $1,000

Closing Date: November 30, 2023

Description: Scholarship is open to students enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a full-time student, in an accredited four-year or two-year institution in the U.S. or U.S. territories, and demonstrates a verifiable need for financial support. At least one parent must be of Hispanic ancestry. Non-U.S. citizens are eligible to apply (DACA or undocumented).


Designli Empowering Women in Tech Essay Scholarship

Description: Applicants must be women who aspire to be business leaders in technology and are US citizens. Applicants must write a 1,000-word essay in response to the prompt, “Tell us what motivates and inspires you to pursue a career in technology or as an entrepreneur, and discuss the challenges, benefits, and opportunities for women in technology.”

Americanism Essay Contest

Description: Contest is open to students in grades seven through 12 (or equivalent). Applicant must be sponsored by a branch of the Fleet Reserve Association or a unit of the Ladies Auxiliary. Applicant must submit an essay on the theme, “Why I am Proud to be an American.”


Military Child of the Year Award

Sponsor: Operation Homefront

Amount: $10,000

Closing Date: December 3, 2023

Description: Award is open to young people ages 13 to 18 who are children of someone who is/was in the military.


Scholarship Essay Contest

Sponsor: Goldman Babboni Fernandez & Walsh

Amount: $1,000

Closing Date: December 1, 2023

Description: Scholarship is open to current college students who want to work in either the healthcare or legal world. Applicant must submit an essay why they want to work in their chosen field. 


Surety Bond Authority Scholarship Program

Sponsor: Surety Bond Authority

Amount: $1,500

Closing Date: December 1, 2021

Description: Scholarship is open to high school and college students who are currently enrolled in or who are in pursuit of a degree in Accounting, Banking, Finance, or other business-related coursework. Applicant must submit an essay on why they have chosen or are choosing a career in Accounting, Banking, Finance, or other business-related fields.


SMART Scholarship

Sponsor: Department of Defense

Amount: varies

Closing Date: December 1, 2023

Description: Full-tuition scholarship with annual stipends and book/health allowances for recipients. SMART Scholars will also be provided with summer internship opportunities and guaranteed employment with the Department of Defense upon graduation. Applicants must be US Citizens with a 3.0+ GPA. Open to current college students majoring in a STEM field or students who will be enrolled in a STEM graduate program in the 2024-25 school year.



Barbara Lotze Scholarship

Sponsor: American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT)

Amount: Up to $2,000

Closing Date: December 1, 2023

Description: Scholarship is open to undergraduate students enrolled, or planning to enroll, in physics teacher preparation curricula and high school seniors entering such programs.


Vanderbilt Ingram Scholarship Program

Sponsor: Vanderbilt University

Amount: full-tuition

Closing Date: December 1, 2023 

Description: Full-tuition merit scholarships for prospective Vanderbilt applicants. Students who are interested in being considered must first apply to Vanderbilt via the Common Application, Coalition Application, or Questbridge.


Dell Scholars Program

Sponsor: Michael and Susan Dell Foundation

Amount: $20,000

Closing Date: December 1, 2023

Description: Scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors who have participated in an approved college readiness program (such as AVID, GEAR UP, Upward Bound – see full list on website) in grades 11 and 12. Applicant must have earned a minimum GPA of 2.4 and demonstrate financial need.


National Space Club and Foundation Keynote Scholars Program

Description: Scholarship is open to high school seniors, college undergraduate students, and graduate students with plans to pursue a career in the science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) fields. Applicant must be a U.S. citizen.


Stephen J. Brady Stop Hunger Scholarships

Description: Scholarship is open to students in kindergarten through graduate school (ages 5-25) who have demonstrated ongoing commitment to their community by performing unpaid volunteer services impacting hunger in the United States within the last 12 months.


Science Ambassador Scholarship

Description: Full-tuition STEM scholarships open to female high school seniors or current college students. To apply, students must film a three-minute educational video of themselves explaining a STEM topic they’re passionate about. Open to undocumented and international students.|


Leadership Enterprise for Diverse America (LEDA) 

Sponsor: Princeton University

Closing Date: December 12, 2023 

Description: Free leadership and college prep summer program at Princeton University for current high school juniors from a low-income background with 3.6+ GPA, open to DACA students.

Allied Van Lines Scholarship

Sponsor: Allied Van Lines

Amount: $1,000

Closing Date: December 15, 2023

Description: Scholarship is open to incoming and current full-time students of accredited colleges or universities within the United States who are working towards an undergraduate degree in Logistics or equivalent fields.



Burger King Scholarship

Description: $1,000 - $50,000 scholarships open to graduating high school seniors with a 2.5+ GPA. Applicants must plan to enroll full-time, without interruption, in an accredited two- or four-year college during the 2024-25 school year.
