TERMS OF THE MONTH

More Financial Aid Terms

Cost of Attendance -The true cost of attending any college or university, including direct (tuition/room and board) and indirect costs (travel, books, etc). All schools must report their Cost of Attendance on financial aid package information and their websites.

Financial Aid  - Any money given to students expressly for educational expenses. A student's financial aid package is comprised of gift aid, free money, borrowed money and earned money.

Gift Aid - Money awarded to students due to academic merit, test scores, athletic achievement, or other factors. These awards may be grants or scholarships, can be renewable and do not need to be repaid.

Free Money - Usually grant money awarded by a state or the federal government according to a family's financial situation. Awards are renewable and do not need to be repaid.

Borrowed Money - Loans granted by government agencies or private banks to cover costs associated with higher education. Loans are granted with interest and must be repaid.

Earned Money - Federal Work-Study provides part-time jobs for undergraduate and graduate students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay education expenses.

Student Aid Report -

After you submit your FAFSA form, you’ll get a SAR, an electronic or paper document that summarizes the information you reported on your FAFSA form. It includes your Expected Family Contribution (EFC), your estimated eligibility for federal student loans and Federal Pell Grants, and whether you’ve been selected for verification.

Verification - Verification is the process your school uses to confirm that the data reported on your FAFSA form is accurate. If you’re selected for verification, your school will request additional documentation that supports the information you reported. Verfication is common (some schools select every student for verification) and NOT an indication that you have done something wrong.

Things to remember for Upcoming Application Deadlines

(November 1, November 15 and December 1)

  • Make sure you have met with your counselor and completed everything you need for their letter of recommendation BEFORE your deadline.

  • Understand that your counselor has a different deadline for the submission of transcripts, letters of recommendation and other documents in support of your application. DON'T FREAK OUT if you see something pending after you have submitted your application.

  • Emails indicating that materials are missing generate automatically from colleges' admissions departments. Those emails are not updated regularly. It is possible that documents have posted weeks before they show upon the common app or applicant portal as received.

  • CHECK YOUR EMAIL DAILY. You may miss out on important directions, scholarship opportunities, or information if you don't.

  • Before you submit, DOUBLE CHECK EVERYTHING. Check for spelling, grammar, and syntax. Ensure that all names and addresses are spelled correctly and written completely.

FAFSA VERIFICATION: BE READY!

If you have completed your FAFSA, check your student aid report carefully: you may have been selected for verification. If so, don't worry - you didn't do anything wrong. You will be required to submit information directly to your school before your financial aid package can be finalized. If you have been selected, there are some things you should do to be ready:

  • CHECK YOUR EMAIL/SCHOOL PORTALS. You will likely receive any requests for more information via your email and any applicant portals for schools you've applied to.

  • Keep the same documents handy that you used to file your FAFSA. If you don't have them saved as PDF files, do that now. You can use a scanner app on any smartphone to scan and save documents into a cloud account(such as Google Drive or iCloud).

  • You will need to provide additional documentation, including an IRS Tax Transcript. Get one now, so that the process will move faster. Go to this site to request a transcript: https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript. It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and have to wait 6 weeks to get it.

  • As always, stop by the SFA or College and Career Center offices for help.
