TERMS OF THE MONTH

Fly-Ins/Summer College Experiences

Looking for all-expense paid college visits? - Many colleges sponsor high-achieving students from traditionally underrepresented groups, students who are the first generation in their family to attend college, and/or students from families with limited financial resources. Some of these programs are also open to undocumented or DACA students.

Programs will take place in Summer or Fall. Some colleges still need to determine if their programming will be in-person or virtual.

You can find a catalog of Fly-In Experiences HERE via College Greenlight and filter by different circumstances (dates, location, school, etc.). Participation in these visits often gives you a competitive edge in the admissions process, so check out this sampling of opportunities and contact Ms. Miller at college@acps.k12.va.us to learn more.

MAJOR OF THE MONTH

English

Long one of the most popular majors on campus, English degrees provide students with widely applicable skills in writing and analysis. A great foundation for graduate study, English majors find work in many different fields.

According to Case Western Reserve University, evidence that an English major is practical:

1) English majors tend to achieve well-paying careers. Mid-career salaries of English majors are equivalent to those of Biology and Nursing majors, higher than those of Psychology and Anthropology majors, though lower than those of Engineering or Accounting majors. (source: Wall Street Journal Report on Salaries by College Major).

2) Humanities majors, including English, have higher acceptance rates to medical school than social science or natural science majors. (source: Commission on the Humanities and Social Sciences of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences Report).

3) English majors score higher on the GMAT than Business majors. (source: Commission on the Humanities and Social Sciences of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences Report).

4) Two-thirds of CEOs say that the most important skills they look for in college graduates are critical thinking and written communication skills, which the English major provides. (source: Commission on the Humanities and Social Sciences of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences Report and Huffington Post).
