Congratulations to the Alexandria City High School's Class of 2023 Scholarship Fund of Alexandria Recipients! This year, the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria awarded over $600,000 in new scholarships! We are so proud of you!

SFA SCHOLARSHIP UPDATES:


Important Information for SFA SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS:


Graduating ACHS Seniors: If you were awarded a need-based SFA scholarship from SFA this year, your Financial Aid/Cost of Attendance Information is due TODAY! Upload it into your AwardSpring portal. Submit your information so your scholarship check can be released in a timely manner. Please be on the lookout for emails with more information from the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria. If you have questions or need help, contact Ms. Samuel (A-121 or via email). If your financial aid award is not yet available, be sure to let Ms. Samuel know as well.



Current SFA Recipients: The 2023-24 SFA Renewal Application is available! The SFA Renewal Application can be completed in around thirty minutes. Beginning this year, we are requiring that all students complete the SFA Renewal Application each year in order to remain eligible for funding. This will be required of all students, even those who have deferred or taken time off from college or their post-secondary pursuits or are not presently in need of scholarship funding. This will provide the Scholarship Fund with the information needed to defer use of your scholarship award.

This renewal application is required for all students seeking funding for the next school year. The renewal application can be accessed at sfarenewal.awardspring.com or at the button below.


Please be aware that this year's priority deadline to complete the 2023-24 SFA Renewal Application is Friday, June 30th. For students who will not have their required documents until after that date, the application will remain open throughout the end of the summer. Scholarship checks will be mailed out on a rolling basis throughout the summer upon receipt of a completed application with all of the required documents.

Economics majors are successful in a wide variety of careers. Although various roles in businesses are most common, economics majors are successful in law, medicine, government, non-profits, and international relations, as well as in academic roles.

The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria, a 501(c)(3) organization, was established in 1986 by concerned citizens to help academically qualified students with financial need from Alexandria City Public Schools afford postsecondary education.


The mission of the Fund, through it's relationship with the community, is to encourage and assist the students of Alexandria City Public Schools by providing them with necessary resources to access and complete a college, vocational or career program of postsecondary education.  


The Scholarship Fund Office is open from 8 AM – 4:30 PM Monday through Friday. Mrs. Miller and

Ms. Rodriguez are available to meet with students before and after school and during lunches and pride time (with a valid pass).

UNDATED SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS



NOVA CORE SCHOLARSHIP

Sponsor: Northern Virginia Community College Engineering Department

Amount: Full-tuition scholarship $6,000 renewable for two years

Closing Date: beginning of each semester

Description: NOVA CORE will provide full-tuition scholarships for up to two years for up to 40 students annually over the next five years. This significant opportunity is especially geared toward under-represented students in the engineering field - minorities, women, first-generation college students, and veterans. These grant-funded scholarships will allow participants to focus on their studies full-time while developing the valuable skills needed to complete their degrees NOVA and transfer to four-year institutions.

Joe Francis Haircare Scholarship

Amount: $1,500

Closing Date: June 1, 2023

Description: $1,500 scholarship open to students applying to or currently enrolled in cosmetology or barbering schools.


American Indian Nurse Scholarship 

Sponsor: National Society of the Colonial Dames of America

Amount: $3,000 per year renewable scholarship

Closing Date: June 1, 2023

Description: Scholarship for American Indian students pursuing a healthcare career. Candidate must be at least 1/4 American Indian and enrolled in a nursing program.


Digital Marketing Scholarship

Deadline: June 1, 2023

Amount: $2,000

Description: Scholarship is open to high school seniors and current undergraduate students who are majoring in (or plan to major in) business, tech, marketing, or communications. Applicants must plan to take at least 10 credit hours during the Fall 2023 semester.


Freedom From Religion Scholarship

Sponsor: Freedom from Religion Foundation

Amount: Up to $3,500

Closing Date: June 1, 2023

Description: The Freedom From Religion Foundation offers several scholarships open to college-bound graduating high school seniors and current college students who will be enrolled at a North American college or university in fall 2023. Each essay contest has a different prompt, but all are related to being religiously unaffiliated.


1st Art Gallery Art & Design Scholarship

Deadline: June 1, 2023

Amount: $1,000

Description: Scholarship open to graduating high school seniors who have been accepted into or students currently enrolled at a college/university, trade school, or design school. Eligible applicants should be intending to study one of the following: Arts - fine arts, music, performing arts, or visual arts; Natural science - biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy or earth science; Social science - anthropology, economics, geography, political science, sociology or history; languages; linguistics; literature; mathematics; Philosophy; psychology or religious studies.


A&F Scholarship 

Sponsor: Abbott & Fenner 

Amount: $1,000 

Closing Date: June 12, 2023 

Description: Scholarship open to high school juniors and seniors as well as current college students. Students must write an essay between 500 and 1,000 words on the following topic: Describe your educational career and life goals. Explain your plan for achieving these goals. Include your degree/major, why you selected it, and how this degree/major will help you achieve your goals.


Herb Block Scholarship

Sponsor: The Herb Block Foundation

Amount: $8,000 per year renewable

Closing Date: June 13, 2023

Description: The Herb Block Scholarship provides financial assistance to students of all ages to attend community colleges in the DC metro area. It helps roughly 100 students each year gain access to higher education they could not otherwise afford.   


Eligible Students:

  • Are US citizens/nationals, Permanent Resident Aliens, have been granted DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) by the US Customs and Immigration Service, or qualify for in-state tuition under the Maryland Dream Act or Virginia Dream Act. (Note: the 2020 Virginia Dream Act refers to the change in VA policy that allowed students who met certain criteria to receive in-state tuition through the SB 935, "Tuition Equity Provision for High School Completers.)
  •    Are residents of Washington, DC, or Montgomery or Prince George’s Counties in Maryland, or the Cities of Alexandria or Falls Church, or the Counties of Arlington or Fairfax in Virginia.
  •    A US citizen/nationals, Permanent Resident Aliens, have been granted DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) by the US Customs and Immigration Service, or qualify for in-state tuition under the Maryland or Virginia Dream Act
  •    Are eligible for (but need not necessarily receive) federal financial aid.
  •    Are attending, or plan to attend, on a full time or part time basis, one of the participating community colleges, and have not yet earned more than 40 credits towards a degree.
  •    Can demonstrate financial need and, if eligible, apply for financial aid.



Kaiser Permanente Health Equity Scholarship

Sponsor: Kaiser Permanente

Amount: Up to $5,000

Closing Date: June 14, 2023

Description: Scholarship open to graduating high school seniors who plan to enroll full-time at a U.S.-located, four-year accredited, not-for-profit college or university; or two-year accredited, not-for-profit community college for the fall 2023 semester. Applicants must complete the FAFSA, have demonstrated unmet financial need, and be interested in pursuing either a clinical career path (e.g., pharmacist, physician, practitioner, nurse) or a non-clinical career path (e.g., accounting, business administration, human resources, marketing, public policy) in the healthcare industry.


Laborde Earles Cancer Scholarship

Sponsor: Laborde Earles

Amount: $2,500

Closing Date: June 15, 2023

Description: This scholarship is open to all college applicants planning to study medicine, public health, toxicology, or another related field. Applicants must be admitted to or currently attending a college or university and will write a policy brief to their Congressperson or local politician detailing the gaps in current policy and why increased regulations will be good for public health.

Amount: $5,000

Closing Date: June 15, 2023

Description: Prize awarded for the best short story, novel excerpt, poem, one-act play, graphic story, or work of literary nonfiction published by Narrative.


American Muscle Automotive Student Scholarship 

Sponsor: American Muscle

Amount: $2,000

Closing Date: June 15, 2023 

Description: Scholarship open to high school seniors and current college students pursuing an automotive-themed major.


ExtremeTerrain Student Scholarship

Sponsor: ExtremeTerrain Outfitters

Amount: $2,500

Closing Date: June 15, 2023

Description: Scholarship open to college/university students and high school seniors who are currently pursuing or plan to pursue a degree in Environmental Studies, Ecology, Land Use, Earth & Atmosphere Sciences, Sustainable Land Management, Environmental Biology, or Sustainable Agriculture Systems. Applicants will submit an essay about recreational use of public lands.


Financial Literacy PSA Scholarship

Sponsor: High Rise Financial

Amount: $1,500

Closing Date: June 15, 2023

Description: Scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors or current undergraduate students who will be enrolled at an accredited college or university within the United States for Fall 2023. Applicants must submit a maximum 500-word PSA on a financial literacy topic of their choice.

Lulu Scholarship for Music Vocation

Sponsor: Guin Records

Amount: $1,000

Closing Date: June 15, 2023

Description: Any high school senior in the greater DMV (D.C., Maryland, Virginia) area who is pursuing a degree related to music, the music industry, the music business, the entertainment industry, or an adjacent field may apply for this scholarship, but students of color are preferred.

To apply, submit an essay OR video about a woman in your life who has inspired you to pursue your dreams.


Boom & Bucket Student Scholarship 

Sponsor: Boom & Bucket

Amount: $1,000

Closing Date: June 15, 2023

Description: Boom & Bucket is offering a scholarship of $1,000 to be awarded each year to a student pursuing a heavy machinery-themed program. This scholarship is available to current and future students planning to attend a program within the next 12 months. The program can be at a college or a trade school anywhere in the United States or Canada.


Horatio Alger Career and Technical Education Scholarship

Sponsor: The Horatio Alger Association

Amount: up to $2,500

Closing Date: June 15, 2023

Description: Open to high school graduates or students who have earned a GED enrolled in a career and technical program in the Fall of 2023. Applicants must be a Pell-Eligible US citizen under the age of 30 who have demonstrated perseverance in overcoming adversity and exhibit a strong commitment to pursue and complete a CTE program at an accredited non-profit institution.


Big Sun Athletic Scholarship

Description: Scholarship open to high school seniors who are student athletes.


Probo Medical Scholarship

Description: Essay contest on medical technology; Scholarship open to current college students and high school seniors with 3.0+ GPA.


Ethiopian Heritage Scholarship 

Sponsor: Chaikin, Sherman, Cammarata & Siegel, P.C

Amount: $1,000 

Closing Date: June 25, 2023 

Description: $1,000 renewable local scholarship. The Chaikin, Sherman, Cammarata & Siegel, P.C. Ethiopian Heritage College Scholarship Fund was created in 2008 to support college-bound high school seniors in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. The fund aims to find and then assist youngsters with few financial resources in pursuing higher education and a much-desired college degree.


Spokeo AI Essay Scholarship

Closing Date: June 28, 2023

Description: Students may enter this essay contest to be awarded a one-time scholarship. Eligible applicants include students who are at least 18 years old and have been accepted to or are enrolled at a U.S.-based university or college. Applicants must also be legal residents of the United States and will submit an essay about Artificial Intelligence.

Description: $1,000 to $5,000 scholarships open to high school seniors and current college students who have a history of activism within either the Asian Pacific Islander and/or LGBTQ+ communities. Applicants do not have to identify as Asian, South Asian, Pacific Islander, or LGBTQ+ to apply, as long as they have a history of work and impact within one or more of these communities.


Navigate Your Future Scholarship

Sponsor: National Air Transportation Association

Amount: $2,500

Closing Date: June 30, 2023

Description: Scholarship open to seniors in high school who have been accepted into an aviation-related program at an accredited college or university. Applicants must submit a personal statement discussing career goals in general aviation, education plan, flight training goals and two or more reasons why they should be chosen for this scholarship.


David Malcolm Scholarship

Sponsor: David Malcolm

Amount: $2,500

Deadline: June 30, 2023

Description: Scholarship open to students who have overcome obstacles to educational achievement – personal, family, demographic or situational – and require help to continue on the path to success. Eligible applicants must be either high school seniors who have been accepted into an accredited college or university or currently enrolled college students.


Korean American Student Scholarship

Sponsor: Korean American Student Foundation

Amount: Up to $5,000

Deadline: June 30, 2023

Description: Scholarship is open to students of Korean heritage who will be enrolled full-time at a school in one of the designated Eastern region states for the 2023-24 academic year. Applicants should also demonstrate a need for financial assistance.


SFA Renewal Application

Sponsor: The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria

Amount: Varies

Priority Deadline: June 30th (Application will remain open after the priority deadline for all students who aren't able to provide documentation by that date. The application will close permanently towards the end of the summer.)

Description: Required for all current college students who received an SFA scholarship during their senior year at ACHS. Students who received need-based scholarships from the SFA will be asked to provide the following documents: College transcript(s), 2023-24 Student Aid Report from the FAFSA (or VASA Application), 2023-24 College Financial Aid Award, and the 2023-24 Cost of Attendance.

Closing Date: July 1, 2023 - $1,000 scholarship available to incoming and current students studying or planning to study the fields of science

(excluding social sciences), engineering, and technology. Applicants must submit an essay on why they are passionate about STEM.


MFMA Scholarship Program

Mesothelioma Cancer Victims Memorial Scholarship

Closing Date: July 8, 2023

Description: Applicants must be accepted to a US-based four-year university or college for any field of study and respond to the question “How has cancer impacted your life?” with either an essay or video.


Financial Empowerment Scholarship

Sponsor: BMTx

Amount: $1,500

Closing Date: July 15, 2023

Description: Scholarship open to students either currently attending or accepted to an accredited college or university. Applicants must create a video explaining the importance of financial empowerment in their life and career.


Sutliff & Stout Annual Scholarship Contest

Sponsor: Sutliff & Stout

Amount: $1,500

Closing Date: July 28, 2023

Description: Applicants must be either out-going high school seniors (graduating summer 2023) OR students currently enrolled in a college, trade school, or university as of the start of the fall 2023 semester.


General and Kelly Tanabe Scholarship

Sponsor: General and Kelly Tanabe

Amount: $1,000

Closing Date: July 31, 2023

Description: Scholarship open to current high school, college, and graduate students, including adult students, who are legal residents of the U.S. Applicants must write a short essay which will be reviewed by a committee to determine the recipient of the scholarship. 


Minecraft College Scholarship

Amount: $2,000

Deadline: July 31, 2023

Description: Applicants must be a US citizen who is currently enrolled in high school or college. Applicants must write a short essay of no less than 500 words about your opinion on how Minecraft can be a positive influence on education and career development.

 

Spirit of Giving Scholarship

Sponsor: Wine Country Gift Baskets

Amount: $1,000

Closing Date: July 31, 2023

Description: High school seniors and current college students planning to attend college or another form of post-secondary education for the full school year following the submission period are eligible to apply. Eligible institutions include but are not limited to four-year universities, community colleges, institutes of technology and accredited credential or certificate programs


Virginia TAG Application

Sponsor: State Council of Higher Education, Virginia

Description: Grant for VA residents attending a private college or university within the state of Virginia.
