AUGUST 2023

A MONTHLY NEWSLETTER

STATEMENT FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Dear SFA Community,

The full impact of the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent opinion regarding the use of race as a consideration in college admission is still being determined. However, we want to assure you that the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria (SFA) is dedicated to continue the support we provide to the entire Alexandria City High School (ACHS) community.

As you are aware, the SFA supports the student body of ACHS by providing support and guidance in school selection, financial aid, college applications and the awarding of over $1.2 million in scholarships this year alone. Our student body and our scholarship recipients represent the incredibly diverse community in which we live and work.

Our applicants come with impressive academic records, amazing life stories and big ambitions that will position them well to compete for placement at all types of colleges and universities here at home and across the country. ACHS has a long and strong record of placing students and admissions officers know the school well and know what they are getting when they accept a Titan. These facts are not changing.

We are very proud of the work the SFA does and of the students we work with every day. Today, as we have over the past 37 years, our staff is here to help those students achieve the success they are destined to reach.

As always, we are only able to do that work with the continued support of people like you for which we are extremely grateful. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me or the SFA office.

Thank you,

Kevin Jahns, SFA Board of Trustees Chair

FAQ Regarding the SFA Scholarship Process

To be clear: The SFA does not use race as criteria for selection. Am I correct?

SFA response:

The SFA application review is a blinded process. Race, ethnic background, gender, financial need or any identifying factors are not considered when applications are reviewed and scored. Donor-funded scholarships may have specific criteria matching them with a recipient based on the applicant’s race, ethnic background, gender, financial need, field of study, participation in specific activities, classes, etc. Matching occurs only after all applications have been scored. All funds raised by the SFA for general scholarships are strictly for students with financial need and no other criteria.

MAJOR OF THE MONTH

UNDECIDED

How do you apply to college if you don't have a major in mind?

Most schools give applicants the opportunity to apply with an undeclared major. While most students are required to declare a major by the end of their second year, many schools give students the chance to craft their own major!

There are benefits and limitations to applying undecided.

Benefits include being able to apply honestly to colleges on your list. Being an honest and curious student can help you stand out to admissions officers. You can consider all of your interests without committing to a major that may not quite fit. Academic and career advising is available to all students, regardless of major status. Students also benefit from creating a college list with fewer limitations.

Drawbacks include not being able to access certain majors or programs if you do not apply as an incoming freshman. Some programs also limit internal transfer opportunities - it may be difficult to transfer into a major as a current student. If you are committed to a particular career path, it maybe helpful to declare a major as an applicant.

Take note of each colleges' policy regarding undecided majors. If you want to declare a major and are having trouble figuring out the best choice, try some of these quizzes to help (inclusion of theses quizzes does not connote endorsement of any schools):
