I submitted my SFA Scholarship Application!

What are the next steps?

Manage recommendation submission

While the SFA application deadline is January 31st, recommenders have until Tuesday, February 14th to submit their letters of recommendation. Students without recommendations will lose points when the overall SFA application is eventually reviewed and scored. Applicants can track by following the steps below:

  •  Log into sfa.awardspring.com
  •  Click on “Application,” then “Recommendation Letter.” When the student originally sent the request to the recommender via the application, the recommendation would have received an email with instructions on how to upload the application. If the recommendation was submitted, the status listed will be listed as submitted/completed in orange text.

If the application status is listed as pending, the student has the option to either “Resend Request” to provide their original recommender with another email with which to upload their letter (in case the recommender has trouble finding the original email). The student also can select “Send New Request” to send a request to an alternative recommender (in case the original recommender they listed is not able to provide a recommendation) or if the email in their original request was misspelled.

Check email regularly

If there is an issue with a student’s application or a student is missing required documentation (i.e. the 2023-24 Student Aid Report from the FAFSA or VASA for students applying for need-based scholarship), the student will be contacted to provide the necessary documentation. Students should regularly check and respond to email requests to ensure that their SFA application can be processed successfully.

Award Notification

Applicants will be notified via email around early to mid-April in regards to the status of their SFA Application. All SFA Scholarship recipients will receive further details about their scholarship award and the awarding process.

TERM OF THE MONTH

DEFERRED

When an application is deferred (defined by NACAC as "[A] response to early applications wherein the student is not admitted but retains eligibility in the regular admission pool"), students may be anxious and feel like they have to DO something.

If your Early Action or Early Decision application has been deferred, keep the following in mind:

The admission committee may want to see more information and they may not They will tell you EXACTLY what they want. Read your decision letter very carefully.

Send what they want. Most schools have very clear directions for deferred students. Send everything they ask for. Do NOT send what they don't ask for.

Check in with your counselor and let them know, as they may have to send additional grades or mid-year forms.

If the school asks you to fill out a form, do that. Don't send an additional essay or recommendation letter. No matter how much you want to. Don't.

If they don't want anything, that doesn't mean you won't get considered for admission.

MAJOR OF THE MONTH

Accounting

One of the most popular majors nationwide, students who pursue accounting can go in many directions following graduation.

Students interested in math, business, and information technology may find accounting to be a good choice. AICPA, the professional organization for accountants, has a lot of information available to high school students interested in accounting.

RESOURCE OF THE MONTH

Tomato One Timer App

Based on the Pomodoro Technique, which encourages completing tasks in 25-minute blocks coupled with short breaks, the Tomato One App (in the Apple AppStore). The technique is named Pomodoro, which means tomato in Italian, to commemorate the tomato kitchen timer used by the creator.

The Pomodoro Technique has five steps:

Get a to-do list and a timer.

Set your timer for 25 minutes, and focus on a single task until the timer rings.

When your session ends, mark off one pomodoro and record what you completed.

Then enjoy a five-minute break.

After four pomodoros, take a longer, more restorative 15-30 minute break.

If you prefer to use a desktop (online) timer, you can find a free version HERE.

February 23: Admitted to College, Now What? (All Lunches, KS College and Career Center A-114)

Accepted? Now What?

Have you recently been accepted to a college? Congratulations!

What do you do next? How do you know if you can afford it? Who will tell you?

If you're confused, the first step is to read your acceptance letter CAREFULLY! Most letters will list your next steps: registering in the accepted students portal, reading and accepting your financial aid package, connecting with other accepted students. There is lots to do.

Among the most important steps in getting from admission to enrolling is financial aid. After you are accepted, schools will send your financial aid package, which will outline free, earned and borrowed money alloted to help you finance your education.

Most financial aid packages look like the picture below and can be very confusing.

We are available to help you understand your financial aid package and determine what college will cost FOR YOU. You don't have to accept each part of your package, especially the loans. Attend the February 23 Accepted to College, Now What? workshop in the College and Career Center (KS A-114) or make an appointment with Mrs. Miller or Ms. Rodriguez to learn more about how to read your financial aid package.
