Seeds ... May 22, 2024...

One of the ways the Holy Spirit shows up here at the corner of Main & Maple is through our annual event following Sheffield's iconic small town Memorial Day Parade. The marching and memorial service culminate right across the street in Barnard Park. After, we invite you to head on over to our churchyard to enjoy a lunch with your friends. The Mount Everett Marching Band will be served, then we have free hot dogs for everyone!

We call it Hot Dog Church and it is brought to you through the generosity of the proprietors of The Elm on Railroad Street in GB and Thrivent. We need your help preparing for this community luncheon as we expect to serve hot grilled food to 300 people or more.

Please send us an email with your name and telephone number if you would be willing to volunteer for the clean-up crew starting around 11:45 on May 27.

Support Sheffield farms

One of the most celebrated foods grown in our area is asparagus from Hadley, Massachusetts. In fact, Hadley has been known as “The Asparagus Capitol of the World.” This asparagus is literally fit for a queen, having been served for many years at Queen Elizabeth’s II’s Annual Spring Feast.

We affectionately refer to asparagus as Hadley Grass. The term “grass” does embrace the reality that cultivated asparagus is a tamed wild vegetable. At the end of a long and cold winter, nothing is more exciting than to see the asparagus spears beginning to pop up out of the soil. This writer remembers traveling to Hadley with her father, as a child, to purchase the coveted Hadley asparagus plants to grow in our home garden along the Housatonic.

Once the season begins, you’ll find asparagus being prominently sold along well-traveled byways and tucked along side roads at small farms and homes. Here in Sheffield, we invite you to visit Bruce Howden's farm stand at 303 Rannapo Road. Howden Farm is famous for its sweet corn and its iconic Howden Pumpkin, but this year, Bruce is also offering Hadley Grass. The farm stand is self-serve, but if you are lucky you might get a chance to say "hi" to Bruce.

The 2024 Sheffield Farmers' Market is open on Fridays from 3 to 6 pm, from May 24th through October 11th.
