We continue to exercise best practices in our collective quest for Covid Mitigation and are following guidelines set up by the City and Borough of Juneau. Masks will be required in the hall except while eating or drinking. When you arrive, the hall staff will ask you to sign in and take your temperature. Day One Lunch Keynote Speaker: Justin Maxon
US Deputy Under Secretary of Rural Development
Prior to being named Deputy Under Secretary for Rural Development, Justin served six years as Chief Executive Officer at the Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation. The Foundation works to support moving people and places out of poverty across the South. Before joining the Foundation, Justin spent 13 years as President of the Mountain Association for Community Economic Development (now Mountain Association), a multi-strategy sustainable economic development organization and CDFI working in eastern Kentucky and Central Appalachia. Justin was on the founding board of the Center for Rural Strategies, and a yearlong fellow at the Sustainability Institute and the Rockwood Leadership Institute. He served at the Kentucky Governor’s request on the Kentucky Climate Action Planning Committee and the planning committee for Shaping Our Appalachian region. He most recently served on Truist Bank’s Community Development Advisory board. He has a master’s degree from Boston University and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kentucky, both in Anthropology. He has two boys, one in college and one in high school.
Day Two Lunch Keynote Speaker: Julie Sande
State of Alaska Commissioner of Commerce
A lifelong Alaskan, Commissioner Julie Sande grew up in the remote logging camps of Southeast Alaska. She brings extensive experience in both the public and private sectors to the role of Commissioner and is focused on building stronger, more resilient communities and growing Alaska’s economy for the benefit of Alaskans.
Commissioner Sande spent much of her 20 years of healthcare experience working with the pioneers and elders of Alaska and credits many of her values and passion for Alaska’s history to the inspiring individuals she has been privileged to care for. Most recently, she served as the Director of the Ketchikan Pioneer Home and as a member of the governing board for the local hospital in Ketchikan. She earned a bachelor’s degree in social work from the University of Montana and a master’s degree in health administration from the University of Southern California. She was appointed to the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority board and the Alaska Energy Authority board in 2019 and elected Vice Chairman in 2021. Commissioner Sande is also a business owner, whose companies include engineering, construction, tourism, retail, and mariculture
