Register for SEAOC's 2022 CBC Revision Webinar Series

The 2022 California Building Code is now the governing building code for building construction in California. This new edition of the CBC incorporates the latest editions of several material standards, as well as new and revised provisions for school and hospital construction. SEAOC has assembled a lineup of distinguished speakers who are each active participants and leaders on the committees and organizations that develop the CBC and its referenced standards. Each of them will share their expertise in the development of these codes and standards, and discuss some of the important new and revised provisions that are now being implemented in California.

Each webinar runs from 12 noon to 1:30 pm, per the following schedule:

Thursday, April 13: AISC 341 - AISC Steel Seismic Design Provisions

Presenter: Tom Sabol, PhD, SE, Adjunct Professor, UCLA

Winner for New Zealand (SESOC) Conference

The SESOC-SEAOC Collaboration Committee has named Stefanie Rae Arizabal, PE of SEAONC as this year's winner of a scholarship to the Structural Engineering Society of New Zealand's Conference June 21-23 in Christchurch.

Funding for the scholarship is provided by SEAOC member donations to the SEAOC Foundation. The intent of the scholarship is to help build long-standing bonds between two of the world’s premier structural engineering societies, SESOC and SEAOC, through collaboration in technical, practice, engineering engagement and equity, and other areas of common interest. Arizabel will make a presentation at the SESOC Conference.

Arizabel is a Senior Engineer at ZFA Structural Engineers in San Francisco/ Passionate about disaster response, she chaired SEAONC’s Disaster Emergency Services (DES) Committee for three years before transitioning to SEAOC DES Chair as well as SEER’s California Chair & Mid-Pacific Regional Coordinator. Additionally, she is a certified Structures Specialist under FEMA’s National Urban Search & Rescue (USAR) program for California Task Force 4 in Oakland. Her goal is to improve the continuity of disaster response at a local, state, and national level.

Outside of disaster response, she has taken a specific interest in helping lead the charge for the advancement of DEI within the structural engineering profession, assisting with SE3 Bay Area and National chapters, and as an inaugural member of SEAONC’s DEI Endowment Committee.

NCSEA and the Structural Engineers Association of California (SEAOC) have teamed up to deliver a brand new Web-Based Seminar Series for you on the newly-published Seismic Design Manual. This web-based Seismic Design Seminar will be delivered over six weeks in six 1.5 hour webinars by some of the industry’s best and brightest minds. This Seminar will present on the following seismic design topics:

  • Cold formed steel building built on a concrete podium
  • Concrete shear walls with coupling beams
  • Concrete ductile coupled walls
  • Steel deck diaphragms
  • Shallow foundations with liquefiable soils
  • Pile foundations
  • Steel special concentrically braced frames
  • Steel eccentrically braced frames

Each presentation will provide examples of IBC 2021/ASCE 7-16 problems that include a discussion of the provisions in the standard, speaking to big-picture concepts and the nuts and bolts of implementation.
