"Service is the rent we pay for living. It is the very purpose of life and not something you do in your spare time." Marian Wright Edelman

Dear Southern Door Community,
Last week we shared that on the day of the telethon, 5th graders and their outreach to the community had raised almost $40,000. This week, we received confirmation that the final total raised was $50,818, which exceeded last year's contribution even during this pandemic time and using a new online way to raise funds. Thank you to ALL for supporting our students and this annual service learning project. It's great to see such incredible community support!

One year ago on the 18th, we closed school on site for the rest of the year! Who could have imagined the year that we would need to undertake—sometimes, its probably best that we can’t predict the future! From not being on site at all, and navigating remote learning and teleworking for everyone last spring, to bringing back now almost 90% of our students five days a week, with our health dashboard at 0% or less than 1% for several weeks now, and ensuring that academic and co-curricular experiences can continue as safely as possible, it goes without saying that this would not have been possible if we as students, staff, and families didn’t have a “can do” attitude!

We also want to thank all the essential workers in health care, safety, and businesses who have worked so hard to meet our community's needs. We indeed have wonderful students, staff, families, and community. This past year certainly demonstrated that we, like the “eagle,” rise above the storm!  It takes everyone's effort to help our children be the best they can be, as Eagle Proud and Eagle Strong!

Yours in Education,
Patti

This week we recognized Hailey Shimon, daughter of Jason and Brenda Shimon, who has earned an NCC Division I scholarship to compete in track & field at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. She signed her National Letter of Intent today with her track team and coaches in attendance. Hailey plans to study biological sciences at the University of St. Thomas, with aspirations of becoming a dentist.

In addition to being an all-around athlete who will earn 12 varsity letters, and has received several all-conference selections, Hailey set the school record for girls discus throw of 120 feet, 8 inches.

Hailey is a high-honor student with a cumulative GPA of 3.87. She is involved in National Honor Society, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and Project 180. She is currently serving a youth apprenticeship at Door County Dental Care in Sturgeon Bay.

TEACH TECHNOLOGY GRANT
Department of Administration secretary, Joel Brennan, recently announced that 141 Wisconsin school districts and libraries will receive nearly $3 million in 2021 Technology for Educational Achievement (TEACH) Informational Technology Infrastructure grants. The Southern Door County School District is a recipient of a $28,506 grant that will help ensure wide-range, robust internet access to students and staff, and support upgraded network infrastructure.
DISTRICT ADMINISTRATOR FINALISTS ANNOUNCED
Penny Price, President of the Southern Door County School District Board of Education says the district is one step closer to selecting its next district administrator. This past weekend, the board interviewed six semi-finalists in the first tier of interviews at a special board meeting on March 13, 2021. President Price indicates the three finalists are:
· Steve Bousley, Principal of Southern Door High School;
· Sheila Briggs, Assistant State Superintendent of Department of Public Instruction; and
· Chris Peterson, Superintendent of Howards Grove School District.

The district hired the Wisconsin Association of Schools Boards (WASB) to lead the superintendent search process. A total of 22 applicants expressed interest in the vacancy created by district administrator Patricia Vickman's retirement on June 30, 2021.
Second interviews will take place on March 23, 2021 with finalists participating in another interview with the Board, an advisory interview with a stakeholder group of staff, parents, and community members, and a tour of the facilities.

The Board of Education plans to announce the new district administrator around April 1, 2021.
WILL THE HAUNTED MANSION CONTINUE IN 2021???
Are you a fan of The Haunted Mansion?? For 14 years, this school wide fundraising event has raised over $350,000 for PreK-12 student programs in the Southern Door County School District. In order to be able to continue this annual event, we are seeking NEW CORE TEAM MEMBERS.
VOLUNTEER leadership vacancies include: project manager, lead carpenter, scenic designer, marketing/public relations, coordinator of volunteers, special effects/technical director, and costume/make-up assistant director. Work begins in July and wraps up in mid-November. It’s been an incredible 14 years, but if The Haunted Mansion is to continue, a NEW core team is needed.

The DEADLINE TO REPLY WITH YOUR INTEREST IS MONDAY, MARCH 22. Please email interest to current co-project manager, Cory Vandertie, cvandertie@sdsd.k12.wi.us. Depending on our ability to fill the CORE TEAM positions, we hope to make an official announcement about the future of The Haunted Mansion in early April.
