"He that plants trees, loves others beside himself." Fuller

Dear Southern Door Community,
We are so fortunate to have a variety of community groups supporting our school and providing educational experiences for our students. This week we extend our gratitude to several groups who helped us observe Environmental Awareness Day.

The Brussels Lions Club, where the motto of every Lion member is simply "We Serve," donated and helped our fourth graders plan four maple trees along the County Highway DK part of the grounds. A fifth Johnny Appleseed tree, will be planted next to the historic Waniger School next fall. The club also donated 500 trees to elementary students and their families. These trees were purchased through the Climate Change Coalition of Door County (CCCDC) and were grown by Evergreen Nursery in Sturgeon Bay. Click on this link to access a little video of the tree planting in progress.

This week, the Climate Change Coalition, Forestry Recovery Project, the Nature Conservancy and Door County Land Trust also provided trees for Mr. Tupa's middle school ecology students to plant on the school property.

Lastly, we were recently informed that Southern Door has been selected as one of only eight schools in Wisconsin to have a white pine "peace" tree planted in September, 2021 as part of next fall's National Peace Tree Project, sponsored by the Menominee Tribal Enterprises.

Southern Door has such great education environments that extend beyond our school classroom walls. Those opportunities in the school yard garden, prairie, school forest, nature center, and sugar shack, are all wonderful examples of the efforts of school staff and community members passionate about providing outdoor experiences in nature to enhance our students' education. It is another reason why at Southern Door, we are Eagle Proud and Eagle Strong.

Yours in Education,
Patti

STUDENT RECEIVES STATE ART AWARD
Congratulations to fourth grade student, Jackson Krueger, who has been chosen by a panel of arts professionals to be awarded The Youth Merit Award, after entering his original artwork in a virtual statewide exhibit sponsored by the ARTS for ALL Wisconsin, a state wide organization. This includes a $25 Gift Certificate and a plaque honoring Jackson and his art.

Jackson's artwork, entitled “Covid Run Away," is a felt pen and colored pencil artwork designed and created entirely by Jackson with support from his teacher, Ms. Basteyns and encouragement from art specialist, Mrs. Schriner-Schmitt.

Congratulations to the following musicians who qualified for State competition in May. With the pandemic, no on-site Solo & Ensemble Festivals were held, and students wishing to compete, needed to send in video recordings of their entries either last fall or this spring. SD GRAD FEATURED IN LEAP 2021 PERFORMANCE

Eleven LEAP alumni students, including Southern Door 2020 grad, Jadacey Teska, were chosen to identify a societal issue. This year they chose “Coping with COVID – 19." These young adults created beautiful individual performances while being isolated throughout the pandemic.

Their performances culminate in an original creation of music, dance, multimedia, spoken word and theater, through which the students express their approach to the issue, share their ideas for a solution, convey the educational materials that brought them to that conclusion, and challenge the audience to shift their own perspectives. A must see! Click on this Green Bay Press Gazette link for more details on the May 1st free virtual performance.
Teacher Chosen for Leadership Institute
Congratulations to Elementary Math Specialist, Deb Diemert, who has been selected to be part of a Coaches’ Panel at this summer’s Bridges Leadership Institute on July 7-9, 2021. Ms. Diemert has been asked to share the adoption process experience that the district uses, and how the Bridges program has been implemented in our elementary. Her focus will be on sharing how weekly common planning and data collaborations are used to support fidelity to the curriculum.
District Earns State Excellence Award in School Communications

The Southern Door County School District was recently honored by the Wisconsin School Public Relations Association (WSPRA) with a Spectrum Award of Excellence, the highest recognition, for its work in school communications. Spectrum Awards celebrates high-quality public relations efforts in Wisconsin school districts. This win marks the District’s second award from the organization.

The District was recognized for their Virtual Dedication Video. Due to the effects of the ongoing pandemic, the District was not able to plan a traditional dedication ceremony to celebrate the completion of the November 6, 2018 referendum projects. Instead, the District partnered with their construction partner Miron Construction and BeConnected to produce a dedication video to share with the community.

The virtual environment allowed community members to hear staff testimonials, share in ceremonial ribbon cuttings, and take a “tour” of the facilities safely. The video has been viewed more than 3,600 times on Facebook, making it the District’s third most viewed video.
