Newly public Newhall County Water District
holds first board meeting.

New Old Stuff: Zero Degrees of Separation?

From Pico on the west to Placerita on the east, the Newhall area was flowing with oil at the dawn of the 20th Century. In a weird little coincidence, the state government man who certified an oil well location near Placerita Canyon in 1900 was the same guy who, 16 years earlier, as what passed for an archaeologist (today we'd call him a looter), purchased the most important assemblage of Tataviam Indian artifacts ever found, and shipped them off to the Peabody Museum at Harvard. They'd been discovered in a cave at what is now the Chiquita Canyon Landfill property. Maybe you've heard of Bowers Cave. The man's name was Stephen Bowers. In 1899 he was appointed State Mine Examiner by our own California Gov. Henry Gage, owner of the Acton gold mines. You might say all of California was a small town back then.
