Op-Ed: Leftie Gun Logic | Joe Messina
My irritation with the "Young Guns" story is that it overdramatizes and lies about the whole truth in order to get us on their side. How about you just give us the facts, the "real" facts, and let us decide what to do with them?

Op-Ed: A Joyful Noise | Darryl Manzer
If you talk to yourself, folks think you're crazy. Just why is that? You can drive down the road singing, and folks who can hear might want to join in. If you talk to yourself, those same folks might call the men in the white lab coats with an "I-love-me" jacket.

Today in SCV History: February 4, 1822

Surveyor Edward F. Beale born in Washington, D.C.; cut through Newhall Pass 40 years later, assembled 270,000-acre Tejon Ranch.

New Old Stuff: We Haven't Forgotten
Somebody's always got to be first. In Newhall, that somebody was George Campton. Henry made Newhall possible, but Campton was its first mover and shaker. Born in the West Indies, Campton came to the SCV in 1875 by way of San Francisco to run Henry's ranch. A year later he bought the first lot in the new town and built a general store (ditto in 1878 when the town moved). He was the first grocer, the first postmaster, one of the first school board members... To quote a bio written about him during his heyday in 1889: "Whatever the future of Newhall may be, the name of George Campton, the 'pioneer merchant,' will never be lost sight of nor forgotten." Presumptuous? Maybe. But for now, we'll see to it.
