Op-Ed: Bird in the Hand | Darryl Manzer

It's a well-known fact inside the Beltway that Obama hands out ambassador nominations like $5 Starbucks cards at a PTA raffle. If you've helped bundle money in any way for Obama, one of your rewards could easily be an ambassadorship - not to Iraq or Iran or Russia, but a more desirable place like Norway.  COMMENTARY

New Old Stuff: Pathfinder For President
Col. John C. Fremont, alias The Pathfinder, passed through the Santa Clarita Valley on mapping expeditions in the early 1840s and returned in January 1847 en route to accepting Mexican Gen. Andres Pico's surrender during the war of 1846-1848.

A decade later, in 1856, Fremont was the first presidential candidate put forward by a brand-new political party: The Republicans. Fremont lost to Democrat James Buchanan, but both polled ahead of the incumbent president, Millard Fillmore of the American Party.

Lots of communities throughout the West claim a connection to the popular Pathfinder; one SCV connection is Fremont Pass, the place where he trekked across the local mountains.

More readily identifiable today is the place named for the opposing general - Pico Canyon.
