SCRLC NEWS

July 14, 2023

DIRECTOR'S CUP

Cheery Friday Greetings!

It is hard to believe that we are already in the middle of July! Here are some items for today:

All Things Annual. SCRLC’s fiscal year ended on June 30, so we have begun to work on all things annual—the annual report, last year’s work plan outcomes, the 2023-2024 work plan, the audit, and the individualized benefits/contributions (“report card”) for each member.

We have also begun to plan the annual meeting, which is going to be held in the Ithaca on Friday, October 27. Please hold that date! The meeting will be in person, but we expect to stream the business meeting portion of it. The members will be approving the revised bylaws. Stay tuned for more information on the location and keynote speaker!

RDA Toolkit. Did you know that we offer a discount on the RDA Toolkit? The Resource Description and Access (RDA) Toolkit is an integrated, browser-based, online product that includes a collection of cataloging-related documents and resources, including guidelines and instructions for creating library and cultural heritage resource metadata.

The discount is from the Empire State Library Network (ESLN) consortial subscription and runs from August 1 to July 31 of each fiscal year. The actual discount varies according to the number of participating institutions. If you would like to sign up for the service, contact Danna Harris at dharris@scrlc.org.

Academic OverDrive. If you are an academic library with under 16,000 FTEs it is also a great time to sign up for ESLN’s Academic OverDrive program, which is managed by the Northern NY Library Network. If you follow that link, you’ll find the subscription rates.

75% of what you pay is allocated for content and 25% for the use of the Overdrive

platform, which includes Kindle downloads. For example, a library that pays $2,400 would have a $1,800 credit toward ebooks for the shared collection, plus use of the Overdrive e-book platform and apps. Great deal, right? Although you can join at any point during the year for an extra charge, if you join right now before August 1, you would just pay the regular fee. Email me if you are interested in this!

Disability Pride Month is celebrated each July and provides an opportunity to honor and learn more about the history, achievements, experiences, and challenges of the disability community. According to the CDC, over 25% of Americans have a disability. For many people, a disability is an intersecting identity that includes so many others, including age, gender identify, race.

The Americans with Disabilities Act, landmark legislation that broke down barriers to inclusion in society, was signed into law 33 years ago on July 26, 1990. Click here for an ADA Tool Kit.

Last week, our Binghamton University Libraries colleague, Ben Coury, wrote an excellent and useful piece for Binghamton University Library News entitled Improving Access During July’s Disability Pride Month. It includes an excellent list of books and other resources to help allies and advocates learn more about the topic.

New Collection: Hunt Family Collection

Richard Pell Hunt was a prime investor in the Waterloo Woolen Factory, which operated as a principled alternative to cotton created with slave labor. The prosperous Hunt family included Jane Clothier Hunt, who hosted Lucretia Mott and her sister Martha Wright for a visit with Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Mary Ann M'Clintock - in which they first planned the 1848 Women's Convention! Thanks to Cyndi Park-Sheils of the Waterloo Library & Historical Society for sharing this great collection with us.

New Collection: Diaries of Helen Alexander

Helen Alexander was born on November 19, 1838, to Hannah (Houghtaling) and John Smith on the Col. Morgan farm near where Wells College now stands in the village of Aurora, Town of Ledyard. She wrote daily diaries and thanks to the Cayuga Museum, we can step into her life as a thoughtful wife and mother in rural 1860s Cayuga.
