News from SCRLC

Recent SCRLC Webinars

These webinars may have sounded narrow in focus, but the content is relevant to any and all of us:

★ Sasha Frizzell of Binghamton University gave us an excellent presentation about cataloging with controlled vocabularies. The recording is here and the slidedeck is here.

★ Walt Aikman, PhD, gave us an equally excellent presentation about our regional environment, focusing on trees. Find the recording here and the slidedeck here.

New Collection: Cortland Library Historical Collection

Former Cortland Library director Jen Graney had enthusiastically participated in the Consider the Source project with us. We scanned material from their archive that reflected the early days of the most democratic of institutions: the public library. This collection includes a supplement of their catalog, publicity clippings, founding documents, and some correspondence about the library's development.

New Collection: Elma Mitchell Collection

Elma Mitchell was a historian and schoolteacher for decades, working throughout Delaware County. She wrote a three-volume work about the history of East Meredith, and donated her collection of materials to the Hanford Mills Museum before her death in 2004. Those materials include hundreds of postcards, photographs, and documents now available on New York Heritage.

New Collection: Weseloh Collection

Todd and Connie Weseloh loved canals so much that they got married on a replica canal boat the Canal Museum where they both worked! The Canal Society of New York State has scanned part of their donated collection, which includes some particularly interesting photographs of boat interiors.

New Collection: David Eugene Smith Postcard Collection

This is a sampling of a postcard collection that may expand tenfold thanks to an SCRLC Digitization Grant (the applications for which are still awaiting board review). In this set of about 250 postcards from Cortland County Historical Society, a dry-witted and world-famous mathematician by the name of David Eugene Smith wrote to his beloved niece Helen Jewett as he travels the world with his wife. "Aunt Fanny." David Eugene Smith was a really big deal, and these postcards are a fun look at his personal life.

Grants & Assistance

Humanities New York Vision, Quick & Action Grants

Action Grants ($6,500, matching 1:1) had an application window that closed last month and will reopen for September. However, HNY's Vision and Quick grants (both with $1,500 caps, matching 1:1) have rolling applications. HNY is offering two webinars this month to learn more about their grants.

ICYMI: NYSCA/GHHN Conservation Grant Program

New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) and Greater Hudson Heritage Network (GHHN) partner on this opportunity to provide funding for collection management supplies for chartered nonprofit museums, historical organizations or other cultural institutions in NYS. The limit is $650, with no match, for things like storage boxes, acid-free tissue paper, HEPA vacuums, and dehumidifiers. Deadline is May 31.

Digital Projects for the Public from NEH

These are giant grants due by June 12 and might just be something to keep in mind if you have lofty plans (and a strong IT team). Recent Discovery Grant awards (<$30,000) include SUNY schools and NYS organizations like Historic Hudson Valley and the Thomas Cole Historic House.

Ideas & Inspiration

Advocate for the 250th!

The Museum Association of New York and the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) have been pushing Congress members to fund efforts for America's 250th anniversary. As AASLH's call for support says, "At the local, state, and national levels, the Semiquincentennial presents an opportunity to engage all people in a whole and complete American history, one that tells everyone’s story and emphasizes our historical and ongoing efforts to become a more perfect union." Read how to help here.

Eastern New York/ACRL Conference in Binghamton

On Thursday, May 23, lots of SCRLC members and other academics will meet at Binghamton's University Union for the 2024 ENY ACRL conference. The keynote speaker is Rachel Ivy Clarke of Syracuse University, who spoke at our last annual meeting, and familiar names in the program guide include John Hosford and Mechele Romanchock of Alfred University; Meghan Lenahan, Ruth Carpenter, Elise Ferer, Jillian Sandy, Curtis Kendrick, Nancy Abashian, and David Schuster, all of Binghamton University; and Megan Palmer of SUNY Oneonta. Registration is a very affordable $40.

NYAC in June in Ithaca & Online

The New York Archives Conference is trying to rekindle the feeling of camaraderie and networking by planning watch parties around the state. SCRLC will be one of the hosting locations, so if you'd like to watch the conference with peers, sign up here. Otherwise, sign up for the June 7 online conference here.

NOVELny Databases Funded

The 2024-2025 New York State Budget included funding to support NOVELny databases through June 30, 2025, so you can rely on another year of access to the Gale databases and Encyclopedia Britannica.

Wells College

Wonderful Wells is suddenly closing, and our hearts go out to the staff and faculty for the sudden and chaotic closure. Library Director Tiffany Raymond, formerly the college archivist and responsible for all of these incredible collections on NY Heritage, wrote the history of Wells College... officially released yesterday. We're so happy for her that it's jumped to #1 in the History of Education genre!

EmpireADC in Cortland, Chemung and Otsego

In the last issue of Cortland County Historical Society's newsletter, director Tabitha congratulated Sophie Clough, Collections & Reseach Assistant, on finishing finding aids for seven sets of town records - and for publishing them on EmpireADC. She included a nice, brief explanation of finding aids for her readers: "Finding aids give a summary of the size and scope of a collection and are a useful tool for researchers when trying to determine if a repository has something you are interested in seeing."

Chemung County Historical Society has done a great job at uploading their 130+ finding aids. Elmira College has added 20 of their finding aids. Toward Oneonta, Fenimore Art Museum is up to 77, Hartwick College has 11, and SUNY Oneonta has 20. We would love to see more participants! Send me an email if you have any questions about EmpireADC, and sign up for the LILRC webinar about EAD generally.

Sponsored Seniors for Hire

Allegany County Historical Society shared on Facebook that they're participating in a program from ProAction of Steuben & Yates, in which older working seniors with their Senior Community Service Employment Program find paid assignments within their communities. What a great program, and perfect for a local historical society!

New Website and an Anniversary Grande Tour in Schuyler

As I checked dozens of websites and Facebook accounts to find some news for this email, I realized Schuyler County Historical Society's had gotten a facelift! At the bottom of the page, it lists the names of three students of St. John's University's MSLIS program as the creators. It looks nice! They've also got a slate of terrific events planned for their 50th anniversary, including a special "Grande Tour" of their three historic sites, with bus transportation included, on June 1.
