News from SCRLC

E-Resources Updates

SCRLC provides our Governing Members and their component member libraries with access to two expensive library-centric databases: OCLC's FirstSearch and EBSCO's Literary Reference Center. Affiliate Members are not included in the subscription contracts, however, they could access the databases for themselves on our Electronic Resources page. EBSCO's Literary Reference Center changed its interface last month, so that it's more similar to other EBSCO database, with a more up-to-date look and feel that's easy for K-12 and college students to navigate. As always, if you want to change how your users log in and access the databases, just send me an email.

In case you missed it, the new NOVELYNY databases launched last month. These are freely available to all New Yorkers. Please make sure to update your library website's databases list if you have one, and help get the word out about these resources.

New Collection: Hanford Mills Postcard Collection

These postcards from the Hanford Mills Museum show scenes of daily life from East Meredith as well as views of hydropower sites from around New York State, like Randall's Mill Dam in Flycreek and the Electric Light Plant in Schenevus. Hanford Mills was once the primary source of electricity, via hydropower, for East Meredith and its neighboring communities.

New Collection: Historical Books of Elmira

Maggie Young of Chemung County Library District's Steele Memorial Library sent over a few digitized old books about Elmira's history! One, an 1892 city directory, joined the other Elmira city directories, but the other four books have their own collection now. There's an 1891 "Glance at Elmira," a 1910 "Views of Elmira," an 1894 pictorial about the Great Flood of 1889, and an anniversary scrapbook about the Elmira Free Academy from 1909.

New Collection: Wells Alumni Collection

In May of 2024, Wells College announced that it would not reopen after the end of the semester due to financial problems. In cooperation with the library staff, we offered alumni the opportunity for a crowd-sourced digital collection, meant to be an online scrapbook about the modern Wells student experience for posterity. If you have ideas for similarly community-driven collections, just say the word!

Grants & Assistance

IMLS Funding Opportunities

The Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program “supports the training and professional development of library and archives professionals.” The National Leadership Grants for Libraries assists projects that aim to create replicable practices, programs, models, or tools to aid in strengthening library and archival services in the US. There's no cost share requirement under $250,000 but the kind of grant request will determine the minimum and maximum request amounts. Applications for both are due September 20.

Speaking of IMLS, the House Appropriations Committee passed its budget last month with a 15% cut to IMLS (the main funding agency for libraries). Let them hear your voice with a quick form message here!

Tompkins County Grants and Beyond

Anna Kelles, our Assemblywoman for Tompkins County and the western portion of Cortland County, shared a list of local grant opportunities in her recent newsletter (sign up here). Could you develop a project promoting Tompkins County as a tourist destination? If so, check out this list of funding guidelines.

Kelles also linked to Speaker Cark Heastie’s Grants Action News, which didn't have anything I thought would interest this audience (this month, at least), but recommends Candid, the organization that runs GuideStar. They offer free training about grant and non-profit management. The topics look good!

NYSCA/GHHN Conservation Treatment Grant Program

Find funding to pay a professional conservator. Applications due September 3.
