JAMESTOWN/SURRY COUNTY — The previously announced reduced service schedule for the Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) Jamestown-Scotland Ferry will no longer be implemented on July 8. As staffing and vessel resources allow, the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry will remain operating under the summer schedule that went into effect May 27 to accommodate the increase in ferry passengers during the summer travel season.
VDOT is still actively recruiting to fill vacancies within the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry team, including the Chief Engineer position that is required on board for every ferry service and subject to the industry-wide shortage of these critical, certified maritime positions. We invite qualified individuals to apply for these positions and join us in maintaining this essential 24-hour service for the public. For more information on available positions and to apply, please visit our careers page.
The Jamestown-Scotland Ferry runs 7 days a week, 365 days a year, transporting motorists for free in both directions across the James River between Surry and Jamestown. Once on board, the trip is approximately 20 minutes. For more information on the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry, including the schedule, visit www.JSFerry.org.
For status updates on ferry service, the public can call the ferry hotline at 1-800-VA-FERRY or use VDOT’s free 511 Virginia traffic tools by visiting www.511virginia.org, calling 511, or downloading the free Virginia 511 mobile app for current traffic and travel information. Additionally, the VDOT 511 traffic cameras also provide views of current traffic queues from approximately 0.5 miles from the ferry boarding locations.
