Your RRB Committees
The RoadRally Board has the following active committees:

Rules Committee:  The Rules Committee advises the RRB on changes to the RRRs (Road Rally Rules), RFOs (Rules for Organizers) and serves as a liaison to the National level events.

Mentoring Committee:  Not a committee that meets, per se, but a group of volunteers, collected by RRB member Hanson, willing to mentor new and emerging programs.

National Events Committee:  Charged with administering the National Road Rally Events:  receives date requests and sanction applications for National Events, assigns liaisons to National Events, and approves sanctions. Advises RRB on changes to the National program.

Regional Development Committee:  Working on issues and actions that can enable growth of the road rally program on the local, regional level.

Publicity Committee: Responsible for promoting the sport of road rally to our SCCA members and broader road rally community.

Checkpoint Chat from the RRB
Thoughts from RoadRally Board Chairman Rich Bireta -

I just returned from the SCCA National Convention and thought this would be an appropriate time to share some of the news coming out of the Convention and to offer my thoughts on the state of our sport and priorities for the RoadRally Board for the remainder of 2013.

The SCCA National Convention is the only time that members of the RRB can meet face to face without the pressures of a competition event. We made good use of our time together meeting formally for a total of six hours and spending several additional hours together in informal discussions. We had a positive and productive Town Hall meeting. Thank you to every one who was able to attend in person. Look for the details of these meetings in the minutes in the next FasTrack.

There are several items of news to share with you. First the big news: the $5 per car Weekend Membership is suspended for one year for RoadRally, yet the Weekend Membership information is still required. The SCCA will evaluate this fee at that time and determine whether this suspension has the desired effect of increasing the number of competitors and number of events that are held. Now is a good time to reach out to the local non-SCCA rally clubs and to expand your recruiting efforts to non-SCCA members. Second item of news: the 90-minute competition limit for events sanctioned as Social rallies is removed. The reason for this change was to remove a barrier to Regions starting a rally program. We encourage new Regions to sanction events as Social rallies, which lowers the sanction fee to a flat $20 and reduces the amount of paperwork involved in the event. Third, we approved a rule change to Article 4 of the RRRs, which limits the number of points in a championship series (course/tour/GTA), to 40 points in a seven day period. All three items have been posted to the www.scca.com forums.

One of the most encouraging meetings I had last week was the annual meeting of the RRB Chair with a delegation from the SCCA Board of Directors, the body which oversees the entire SCCA and appoints RRB members. The message from these BOD members (Bruce Lindstrand, R David Jones and Mike Lewis) was clear: Work to increase participation in the sport of road rally; make events fun to attend and participate in; don't let us (the BOD) delay your efforts; make changes necessary to accomplish these goals as you see fit. The entire RRB was in attendance and we left that meeting optimistic and encouraged.

I had the opportunity to present an updated version of the RRB's Strategic Plan, sometimes known as the STRAP. Some of you may view this plan or any plan in a low light, but I maintain that it does determine where the RRB should spend its limited resource of time. We'll be posting this on the SCCA web site in April, but the strategic plan basically says we want to increase the number of road rally events, increase the number of regions organizing events and increase the number of entries to these events. We will to do this by identifying and implementing actions which make Road Rally events easier to organize and conduct, more fun for competitors, more visible inside and outside the SCCA, and more frequent in their occurrence and geographic scope.  The specific actions we are taking in this area are documented in our "Growing the Program" document.

The second major item in the plan admits that no previous actions have succeeded in adding enough events, new organizing committees, and competitors to the National program. The RRB has offloaded administration of National program to a National Events Committee of the RRB. Further, we'll minimize the number of rules changes to the National program, limiting changes to those which increase participation in the sport, or simplify or modernize the National program.

Another item of news coming out of the Convention is that we had an open session for Regions wanting to start (or restart) their RoadRally program. This session was very well attended and I am happy to announce that we have received interest from seven SCCA Regions who want to start a rally program and we have assigned mentors from the RRB to five of these programs.

Feel free to contact me at Rich Bireta with your comments or feedback.

RReNews Questions Asked Thus Far
We'll be sticking to Road Rally questions in the future, yet I want to answer three questions that have come in from many folk and get them out of the way with this first RReNews!

How did I get on this list?

I worked to build the RReNews mailing list with our RoadRally Weekend Members from recent years, active SCCA Members, our Rallymasters, faithful Checkpoint Workers, Safety Stewards, Divisional RoadRally Stewards, Registrars, Drivers, Navigators and Board Members.

Many of you have been added through my efforts in working with Rick Myers and Michelle Lour in SCCA's Membership Department, Deena Rowland in the Rally/Solo Department, and fellow SCCA Members serving with me on Publicity Committee.

Another one of those damn National Staff non-rally persons? Who is Cheryl Babbe? What does Arctic Alaska Region have to do with this?

Across the Regions of the SCCA, there are many enthusiasts actively working on their Regional RoadRally programs. Your volunteer RoadRally Board and Committees are comprised of SCCA members from Alaska to Pennsylvania and Minnesota to Texas! I happen to be with the Arctic Alaska Region, which I founded back in the Spring of 1988; I wanted a home for my beloved sport of Road Rally. This is my fortieth-year of Road Rally and not my last!

Seeing a need for an eNews to reach fellow RoadRally enthusiasts in the SCCA, I had been working on one for a Spring release...and then came along Chair Dave Head and the opportunity to work with the Publicity Committee! I've enjoyed my time working with this Dave, Bruce and Sasha on this Committee, and we have some exciting works coming down the road!

RReNews, is a work in progress and growth. I shall hope to prove to those four old rallyists who have seen many renditions of newsletters come-n-go, and who have given my effort the 'ol "meh, this won't last long", that they don't understand the desire of fellow Road Rally enthusiasts to have communication about our sport. Heck! I'm hoping they'll choose to submit and share their stories!

How do I get off this damn list?

I'll be honest. I hope you stay for a few editions and give us a chance. Yet should it be that you do not wish to receive our RoadRally eNews - please click the SafeUnsubscribe link at the bottom of this message. We truly don't want to add to your inbox should you not wish to receive our monthly mailings; clicking that link will allow you to remove your name from future mailings of my SCCA RoadRally eNews efforts.

Now, let us move onto the Road Rally matters -
