Fantastic 43rd Annual Meeting!

Staff Hirings and Promotions!

Completing a series of staff hirings and promotions over the past year, we hired Julia Prange Wallerce to be our new Manager of Communications and Marketing.  Julia is a graduate of the Tufts Urban and Environmental Policy masters program at Tufts University, and had worked in the Green Development Center for the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) since 2010 until she began at SCC this week.  Julia and her husband, Chris, bought their first home in Union Square last year. SCC also moved Shannon Erb from her duties as Marketing & Communications Coordinator at SCC for the past 3 years to her new duties as Asset Building Specialist, as part of our efforts to grow our Financial Opportunity Center and Asset Building programs.   Finally, the SCC Board of Directors promoted Meridith Levy, SCC's Director of Community Organizing and Planning since 2003, to the new position of Deputy Director.  This move both recognizes Meridith's tremendous contributions to SCC over the last decade and provides a 2nd top level manger, working with SCC's Chief Executive Officer to guide the organization's overall work.

Development in Union Square
SCC and Cathartes Private Investment co-hosted a community meeting on Tuesday 2/5 to roll out an exciting new project in Union Square. Last year, SCC announced plans to build 40 new affordable apartments at the site of the old Boys and Girls Club. Cathartes now plans to build 44 market-rate apartments next-door, 5 of which will be affordable due to inclusionary zoning. Both buildings will have commercial space on the first floor. more
More changes at Assembly Square
Jobs for Somerville has been actively following proposed changes to the zoning of the former IKEA site in Assembly Square. Federal Realty Investment Trust (FRIT), the developer for the rest of the new Assembly Square district, is looking to buy the property from IKEA. FRIT has requested a zoning change on the IKEA site, with plans to construct a 100,000-square foot single-story grocery store and a parking structure. more
Pathways Program jobs training
On Saturday, January 26, 10 Somerville residents attended an information session about the Building Trades Council's Pathways Program at SCC's office. Traditionally, the info sessions have been only in Boston, but this year members of SCC's Jobs for Somerville committee worked with the Pathways staff to organize an info session here. more
As always, we appreciate feedback.  We look forward to seeing and hearing from you soon!
