April Shop Talk Discussion: USING MENTOR TEXTS

When: April 9, 7-8 PM Mountain Time (US and Canada)

Shop Talks are ZOOM ONLY with no in-person meeting:

https://scbwi.zoom.us/j/92630402188?pwd=UnNNQmIzL0ZrZzFDZ1BycW5veEovZz09

Meeting ID: 926 3040 2188

Passcode: 380848

Sharon Sivinski will facilitate a discussion of how we use mentor texts to improve our writing by modeling the excellent craft and skills of authors and/or illustrators we admire.

If you use mentor texts, bring examples to share of books and techniques you use. We’ll look at some examples of these skills and any others you bring along.

  • Character Arc
  • Character Traits
  • Description (alliteration, repetition, vowels, onomatopoeia, sensory details,

rhyme)

  • Page Turns
  • Style and media for illustrators

Never heard of mentor texts before? Here’s a great description from Kate

Messner of how to use We Are Grateful: Otsaliheliga by Traci Sorrell and Frane Lessac. It’s short, so you can read it in advance if you’d like.
