Jhonny Cedeno Joins SCAN Board

How did you first get involved with SCAN?

I had not heard of SCAN until my colleague, Nicole, talked about SCAN’s work in the community. She was on the Board of Directors and asked me to consider joining as she rolled off the Board. I was looking to get involved with something that I could be focused and passionate about and serve the most vulnerable in our community. It ended up being a good match at the right time.

What has your life/work experience been that brought you to SCAN? What is your current role?

I now work for Altria as the Vice President of Corporate Development and International Business. However, I always say that my most important role is husband and father of four. We have moved a lot and it has been a great experience to see them grow. My youngest is 15 and my oldest is 27. My experience as a father to them drew me to SCAN’s mission and purpose.

What inspires you to stay involved with your work at SCAN?

The ability to make a positive impact in the community my family lives in. I want to see Richmond thrive and part of that is ensuring our children thrive.

Is there anything you wish other people knew about SCAN?

I wish more people knew about SCAN. Once you know about SCAN’s work it is irresistible to align yourself with the cause.

What has been the best experience with SCAN so far?

As a first year Board member, it has been a very good grounding and learning experience. I tend to be very data driven and learning about the number of children SCAN reaches and the breadth of services offered is impactful. The onboarding process gave me an even greater appreciation for the work at a granular level.

Do you have any goals or hopes for the next year with SCAN?

That we continue to raise more money for the work, because resources are important for making it happen.

Are you involved with any other community organizations, hobbies, or activities?

I am passionate about the Hispanic Community at Altria. I serve as one of three leaders of the Hispanic Executives Caucus for Altria. We reach about 150 managers and middle managers and work to recruit/retain Hispanic talent and create community within the company.

What might someone be surprised to learn about you?

Work engagements at Altria sometimes involve karaoke and others are often surprised by my song choice. I often pick hip hop artists like Run DMC, LL Cool J, and 50 cent. I grew up in Jamaica Queens, New York and have an affinity for groups that were raised there.
