SC State visiting professor to speak about Columbia artist’s works

Quincy Pugh’s “Made in American with Pride,” mixed media on canvas.

ORANGEBURG, S.C. –  Dr. Frank Martin, visiting professor of art history and theory at South Carolina State University, will discuss the works of artist Quincy Pugh at Stormwater Studios in Columbia, South Carolina, on Saturday, Oct. 7, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The discussion centers upon the exhibition “Quincy Pugh: A New Chapter,” a collection of selected works by the Columbia artist created since 2018. This exhibition marks a pivotal time in the artist’s personal and professional life, presenting subjects that reflect a shift in focus from Pugh’s long career as a professional librarian and media specialist in Richland County to a new level of service for the local community as a compelling visual artist.

The exhibit runs through Oct. 19 at Stormwater Studios, 413 Pendleton St., Columbia. More than 20 pieces are included in this installation, which celebrates the courage, struggle, beauty, patriotism, search for justice, and spirit of African Americans from the South. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, Oct. 7, from 5-9 p.m. and will include Martin’s discussion.

The discussion will explore the represented and implied themes in an assembly of works revolving around issues of social justice, identity, culture and politics.

Dr. Frank Martin

Pugh had been named finalist and participant in a recent group exhibition titled, "Cultural Heritage | Creative Expression” which showcased the finalists of the inaugural Stormwater one-year Residency Program, designed to support and celebrate diverse voices within the artistic community.

Pugh holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in studio art from Augusta (Georgia) University.
