Las Vegas Justice Court Seeks Pro-Tempore Judges

The Las Vegas Township Justice Court is accepting applications for the following separate Pro Tempore lists for the 2025-26 calendar years:

Justices of the Peace Pro Tempore (NRS 4.032): These justices preside on an as-needed basis over various types of criminal, civil, eviction, or traffic matters when judicial officers are unavailable.

Small Claims Justices of the Peace Pro Tempore (NRS 4.032/NRS Chapter 73): These justices preside on an as-needed basis in small-claims hearings when judicial officers are unavailable.

An applicant may apply and be selected for one or both categories and selected candidates are expected to sit at least once per calendar year.

U.S. District Court Seeks Volunteers for CJA Panels

The Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada is hosting an “Introduction to Minor Guardianship” CLE at noon until 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 17, in the Engelstad Family Classroom and via Google Meet.

In this course, attorneys will discover the role of children’s attorneys and court proceedings/processes involved in guardianship cases. Thousands of children in Clark County are cared for by someone other than their parents due to their parents’ death, incarceration, or unsuitability. These children, who are outside the supervision of Children’s Protective Services, have largely gone without advocacy, despite facing many of the same issues as children in the dependency system.

Guardianship Attorney Marcus Brouwers will present this seminar for attorneys who would like to represent children in guardianship. Attendees will learn the role of the children’s attorney and an overview of the court proceedings and processes involved in guardianship cases for both guardianships of the person and estate. Lunch will be provided to in-person attendees, and attorneys who refer others to this CLE can receive a free Starbucks gift card.

Changes Coming to Nevada Rules of Appellate Procedure

On June 7, 2024, the Nevada Supreme Court issued an order in ADKT 0580 amending the Nevada Rules of Appellate Procedure. The amended rules are effective prospectively on August 15, 2024, as to all pending cases and cases initiated after that date.

The court further ordered that these amended rules shall control when conflicts arise between these amended rules and any other court rules. Time frames accruing before the effective date of these amended rules shall be calculated using the existing, unamended rules. Time frames accruing on or after the effective date of these amended rules shall be calculated under these amended rules.

For the benefit of the bench and the bar and to facilitate the transition from the existing rules to the new rules, attached to the order as Exhibit A is a redline of the revised NRAP against the existing NRAP. A clean copy of the revised NRAP is attached as Exhibit B.
