November 19, 2023

Sunday, November 19th, 2023 is Women’s Emphasis Sunday. The Women’s Day Chair is Donna Pugh. Our women will be leading in worship for the broadcast, as well as the in person service. Be sure to give a special contribution in the envelope labeled Women’s Day. Give commensurate with your capacity to support our congregation of believers in Christ. We ask if you are able, to give a dollar for every year that the church has been in existence, $138.00.

Please note: We will have Second Baptist (adult size) T-shirts available for purchase at a cost of $15 each.

Thank you in advance for helping us defer the cost by purchasing one or more t-shirts.

Thursday, November 23rd, 2023 at 10:00 am is our in person Thanksgiving Day Worship Service. Let us express our gratitude to the Lord for all the Lord has done for us. The psalmist reminds us that the Lord is good, the Lord’s mercy is everlasting and the truth of the Lord endures forever.

African Americans commemorate and celebrate Thanksgiving as an awareness of the goodness, generosity, and graciousness of the Lord in the particularity of the peculiar predicaments of our lives communally and individually. It is amazing that we have emerged and evolved from the excruciating experiences of captivity, discrimination, and the oppressive structures of slavery and segregation; fortified with a faith that saves and sustains us with an attitude of gratitude, praise and thanksgiving.  Let us gather and give thanks for all the Lord has done for us.

Sunday November 26th, 2023 is the 26th Sunday after Pentecost.

Preserving Second Baptist Church in Los Angeles

We’re thrilled to be featured in a new video from the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund focusing on the rich history of our church and congregation.

From serving as a hub for the Civil Rights movement, to being a nucleus of the Black community during the great migration, to representing the legacy of architect Paul Williams, we couldn’t be more proud of our history or more optimistic about our future.

Thanks to the support of the Action Fund, Lilly Endowment, Inc., and all of you, we’re looking forward to serving the Los Angeles community for decades to come.

Member News

Member Valerie McDonald represented Second Baptist in New York!

On Wednesday, November 15, 2023, an intimate community of social impact leaders attended the 2nd Cultural Preservation Leadership Summit at the Ford Foundation’s Center for Social Justice in New York City. This gathering is for changemakers that harness the power of place and preservation of African American culture, and it served as a platform for sharing insights, discussing trends, and fostering meaningful connections that contribute to the equitable growth of the preservation movement.

The panel assembled - titled “Institution & Culture" - discussed the importance of the Black church as an institution, its role in the cultural life of Black people, and the historic preservation work of stewarding these heritage assets for religious, civic, and educational uses. The invited panelists included Ted Debro, 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL; Valerie McDonald, Second Baptist in Los Angeles, CA; Bishop Anne Benning Byfield, St. James AME Church in Mayfield, KY; and Dr. Noelle Trent, the Museum of African American History, Boston and Nantucket. The invited moderator was Action Fund Advisor Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr.

Congrats to Member Erin Estelle, who was nominated by her team for Woman of the Year.

Though she did not win, the video submitted on her behalf shares some of her professional accomplishments.

Congratulations!

This flexibility allows businesses to allocate the funds where they are needed most to aid in their recovery efforts.
