As you are reading this, many of you will have been matched to your student(s) and perhaps met them for the first time. You will soon understand what an awesome opportunity you have to make a child believe that they can fly. Many of our children are just becoming developmentally ready to learn to read. But because of educational pressures that are brought to bear, they might believe that they are not very good at it, that it is hard, and that they just don't like it.

Reading Buddy Tip
The title Reading Buddy implies two roles for the volunteer: reading tutor and supportive mentor. Both roles are important and intertwined. When we build strong, supportive relationships with students they feel more at ease to take the risks that learning requires. Because of this it makes sense to take some time in the first few sessions to get to know your students. What you learn about your students will help you to tailor your sessions to fit their unique interests and talents and help them to feel comfortable tackling challenges with you.
