Note from our Executive Director

“To learn to read is to light a fire” — Victor Hugo, Les Miserables

So, we began the year with great optimism, and we have not been disappointed. We are back in the schools of our partner districts and are serving children. We have reestablished ties with our university partners, St. Mary’s University and Our Lady of the Lake, with university students being part of the solution to children’s literacy while fulfilling their degree requirements.  Old and new faith-based and corporate partnerships are reemerging/emerging, helping in the rebuilding of our Reading Buddy Corps.   And, we just finished celebrating our renewed hope with our 2022 Sip and Spell event that brought together San Antonio Youth Literacy (SAYL) supporters from across the community for an evening of fun and fundraising. Who would have believed it 2 years ago. Wow! So much to rejoice about the upcoming season of thanks and giving.

But let’s not forget the most important reason to be thankful for all of us at SAYL. Every time a Reading Buddy meets with their student, they are lighting a fire that will burn bright for a lifetime. For those of you who are Reading Buddies, thank you for being another caring adult in the life of our students. If you are not a Reading Buddy become a part of one of the most rewarding experiences of your life. We are wishing all of you the Happiests of Thanksgiving with family and friends. You make what we do so rewarding.

Big thank you to the Bexar County Women's Bar Association and Foundation for selecting SAYL as this year's beneficiary for their annual showcase event: Autumn Affair. Generous gifts from such wonderful organizations like the BCWB truly make the difference for us, and we are extremely grateful!
