Coastal Alabama Community College highlighted for developing new ways for a career

Apprenticeships are not new to our region. Expanding apprenticeship opportunities to individuals is a solution to barriers to balancing work and school for many. Coastal Alabama Community College was part of a year-long case study researching the role of an intermediary, creating programming to fill community needs, and navigating the complexity of regulations and licensing. Baldwin Girls Build: Empowering Futures in Nontraditional Careers

In collaboration with the Baldwin County Public School System, the Baldwin County Homebuilders, and Professional Women in Building, the second annual Baldwin Girls Build Camp kicked off the first week of June! The camp has almost doubled since the 1st camp last year from 15 girls to 25 rising 7th, 8th, and 9th grade girls this year. This year, the new girls built and wired a Jinga lamp, and the 2nd year girls built and wired a vanity mirror with the help and amazing instruction from Chad Eubanks and Scott Larson- HVAC and Carpentry CTE Teachers from Baldwin Prep. The girls also worked on a big group project of adirondack chairs. Between building time in the shop, girls participated in construction field trips, team-building games, and STEM activities all with their Career Coaches.

"This is one of my favorite projects we work on. This camp has inspired so many young girls to pursue a non-traditional career for women, and it gives these girls the confidence to feel like they can do anything they set their mind to," says BCBE Career Coach Morrell Baxter.

Next year's BGB Camp will occur at the new technical high school, Baldwin Preparatory Academy.
