Our mission is to serve as the informed voice for mental health in rural America, and to provide mental health information and resources. We are working to confront mental health challenges in rural communities and the stigma that surrounds mental illness.
A Message from Rural Minds Founder
and Chairman Jeff Winton

As you’ll see in this newsletter, the summer of 2024 has been both busy and productive for Rural Minds.

One of the highlights occurred a few weeks ago when a film crew from USA TODAY visited my dairy farm in upstate New York to learn about our work at Rural Minds for a video and article they were developing to raise awareness about rural youth mental health challenges.

We are grateful to Pfizer for sponsoring this project and choosing our nonprofit to help shed light on the growing mental health crisis among rural youth. We also greatly appreciate our partnership with the National Grange and Grange member Asheton for sharing her mental health journey as a young person from a rural community and her mother, Debbie, for providing a parent’s perspective. We hope you’ll take a few minutes to watch Asheton’s moving story in the video here: Closing the Mental Health Gap Among Rural Youth in the U.S.

In July, we presented our second 2024 Connections rural mental health webinar: “Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage: Changes from the Inflation Reduction Act.” If you missed it, you can click here to watch the recording. And be sure to join us for the next webinar on Wednesday, August 21, at 1 p.m. ET – “Impact of the Inflation Reduction Act on New Treatments for Mental Illnesses.” Find more information and a link to free registration below.

As always, we are thankful for your continued support and the opportunities to collaborate with other organizations to eliminate the stigma, silence, and suffering around mental illness in rural America.

The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) includes price-setting provisions that will result in less research for new medicines that can be prescribed in a pill or capsule form. Known as the “pill penalty,” this one piece of the IRA threatens the development of future breakthrough drugs that treat mental illnesses, cancer, and many other diseases.

Featuring a presentation from Candace DeMatteis, Policy Director for the Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease, this 45-minute webinar will explain the “pill penalty” and discuss its negative impact on access to mental health treatments for patients in rural America, as well as for all patients who prefer the convenience of taking medication in the form of pills or capsules.

Sponsored by Grange Advocacy, this free webinar will be presented by Rural Minds and the National Grange via Zoom with the option of audio-only.

Collaboration is key for Rural Minds in our work to confront the mental health challenges in rural America and eliminate the stigma, suffering, and silence that surround mental illness. Embracing JOMO: Finding Peace in the Present Moment

Guest Blog Post by Olivia Davis

In today's fast-paced world, people often find themselves caught in a constant loop of social media updates, work notifications, and never-ending to-do lists. This persistent connectivity can lead to FOMO or the Fear of Missing Out.

FOMO is the anxiety stemming from the belief that others are experiencing better moments without you. This fear can keep you glued to your screens, leaving you with feelings of inadequacy and dissatisfaction.

But there's an antidote—JOMO, the Joy of Missing Out. JOMO is about finding happiness in what you are doing and where you are without the constant worry of missing out on something better. It encourages you to slow down, appreciate your experiences, and prioritize your well-being.

Rural Minds on the Road – Raising Awareness of Rural Mental Health Challenges
Here are some highlights of the events that featured Rural Minds over the last few weeks to help raise awareness of rural mental health challenges and provide actionable information and resources for confronting the mental health crisis in rural America.

In June, Jeff Winton represented Rural Minds in Lisbon, Portugal, at the Global Mental Health Community Summit sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim that included 50 other delegates from 22 countries. In this photo, fellow mental health advocates from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Belgium stopped by Rural Minds’ display to learn about our work in confronting the mental health challenges faced by people living in rural America. We are grateful to Boehringer Ingelheim for bringing together mental health advocacy leaders, healthcare professionals, and the patient community to better understand and meet the needs of people living with serious mental illness and their care partners.

On July 9, Jeff had the opportunity to speak to more than 100 attendees at the annual meeting of the American Association of Avian Pathologists in St. Louis. It’s a challenging and stressful time for many involved in the poultry industry because of the widespread and devastating effects that avian influenza is having on poultry farms. During his presentation, Jeff shared mental health information and resources to provide hope and help for those struggling.

From July 15-16, Jeff represented Rural Minds as a patient advocate at The Fourth Chief Patient Officer Summit in Boston, MA. Jeff was among approximately 200 healthcare industry professionals and patient advocates at the meeting who are fighting for healthcare equity for people living with various diseases.

ADAA + Rural Minds Rural Faith Leader Survey

Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA) is partnering with Rural Minds to address the mental health conversations happening in rural faith communities. We are asking rural faith leaders to complete a short survey – that should take less than two minutes – to share feedback on the issues that matter to your community. Your responses will help ensure that we create impactful resources to help break the stigma around mental health.
