Project Update: 2022 National Watershed & Stormwater Conference Highlights
From April 26th to April 29th, the Center for Watershed Protection, Inc. hosted its seventh annual National Watershed & Stormwater Conference in St. Petersburg, Florida. Each year, this conference provides a forum for sharing fresh ideas on watershed and stormwater management principles and practices. This year, there was a tremendous level excitement felt by the conference attendees in participating in the in-person event after two years of virtual conferences. The Center went above and beyond to make this a thrilling event filled with presentation about cutting edge research with experienced practitioners, evening activities which provided opportunities to network, and field trips to enjoy the local. Here are some highlights from the conference!

On the latest AquaPod podcast, LakeTech President and Founder Eli Kersh discusses his unique data management platform designed to support private and public lake managers with data-based action plans. Water-focused podcasts were popular in May, as In-Situ representatives Kerry Caslow and Andrew Luessenhop joined the Cleveland Water Alliance for the inaugural episode of the CWA Innovator Showcase. Both conversations highlight the ways in which new technology, creative partnerships and an urgent need for action are driving improvements in water quality monitoring.

CWP Staff Profile: Meet Yan Yang
Marlyn Argueta interviews Yan Yang, CWP's newest intern.

How did you get started working on watersheds?
I practically grew up outdoors so I’ve always had a great appreciation for nature. I found myself working with Howard Ecoworks in BMP construction. Working there, I found myself interested in the “how” and the “why” of stormwater management and how that impacts our environment. I reached out to CWP as an intern to learn more about watershed management and have been lucky to do so ever since.

What is your favorite part about working for the Center?
My favorite part about working at the Center is all the new skills and concepts that I’ve learned. I get to be involved in so many different projects and in turn get to learn more about how broad and expansive this field is.

Now for the silly questions. What was your favorite TV show when growing up?
I loved watching Psych with my friend growing up. Even to this day, it is still one of my comfort shows.

Which sea creature is your favorite?
The Blobfish.

What is your favorite river?
My favorite river is the Patapsco River. I always go there with my friends during the summer.

If you could have any one superpower, which would you choose?
I would love to have the ability to freeze time. I can really just do anything I want while the rest of the world is frozen around me.

What do you want to make sure you do before you die?
I would love to travel to all seven continents and experience the different cultures and meet new people.

CWP Announces the National Watershed Research Network
Communities across the country are working hard to meet clean water goals but need answers to a growing set of research questions about the causes of watershed impacts and effective solutions to address them. Lack of information, funding, time, and staff resources often hinder progress on translating research into measurable action. 2022 Webcast 5: Using Drone Mapping for Water Quality Improvement Projects
June 22nd, 2022, 1:00 - 2:30 PM EST
Description: Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs or drones) have been around for a while now and have been used in mapping for a variety of purposes such as flood assessment, topography creation, current condition documentation, or change analysis. In Vermont, the use of drones in water quality work is beginning to take off (terrible pun intended). This webcast will explore how UAV mapping can be leveraged at a variety of scales and funding levels to create high-quality imagery and topography for use in assessment, planning, design, and implementation, in particular with respect to dam removal and flood restoration projects. But wait – there’s more! Data is cool – but presentation is cooler (especially when it comes to engaging stakeholders at all levels from seasoned practitioners to the general public). We’ll also take a look at different ways to present UAV data that go beyond the printed page or PDF.

2022 Webcast 6: Erosion and Sediment Control

Description: Erosion and sediment control (ESC) programs are a fundamental element of water quality protection programs that have been around in many parts of the country for decades. Managing runoff from an active construction site while construction equipment is literally moving the ground under your feet has presented continuing challenges for the regulator and regulated communities. This webcast will provide an overview of how ESC permit implementation programs are designed to work and discuss strategies for training, plan review, inspection, and enforcement that have been successful at improving on-site compliance.
