Dog Park Update

New Laurel St. Dog Park changes are rolling over into place! Currently in the design phase, the city has been working with an architectural design firm to develop design plans for the renovation. Funded through a $1.24m Prop. 68 grant, the park will provide new amenities for those with 2 and 4 legs.

The current timeline for the project is as follows:

  • July 2023 – December 2023 - Community Services Commission Review and Final Design of Project
  • January 2024 - Project Bid Process and Award
  • February 2024 - Enter Construction Phase
  • June 30, 2024 - Project Completion • Project Open to the Public • Final Payment Request
  • June 30, 2028 - End of Grant Performance Period

An update about the project took place during the Community Services Commission meeting on August 23. Residents are welcome to provide input by contacting our Community Services Department. The City Council will hear an update at their September 6th, 2023 meeting.

Fiber Optic Construction Update

The installation of the fiber optic broadband infrastructure has been taking place all across Kingsburg. Construction is nearing completion for the entire project. After construction is completed, the fiber infrastructure will be installed in the conduit, allowing for networking and the connection of residential and commercial properties.

The project includes the installation of 16.5 miles of fiber infrastructure, which will also serve City facilities directly, including office buildings, water wells, and existing public safety camera infrastructure, and offer the ability to expand. The project, when complete, will have the ability to serve all city residents and businesses, offering another high-speed reliable internet service provider.

Follow Kingsburg Media Foundation for updates, view existing plans, and stay tuned for pre-sales for fiber optic plans!

Police Department Remodel

Earlier this year, remodeling of the Kingsburg Police station began in order to accommodate our growing department and improve workable spaces.

The improvements include new evidence check-in and storage, reconfiguration of work spaces to allow for additional personnel, changes to the training room to for multi-use, as well as locker room, flooring and building upgrades. The improvements are being funded through the City's Measure E public safety tax.

Stay tuned for additional details including when the PD will be open for an open house to view the changes.

Golden State Blvd.

Construction work on the Golden State Blvd. project continues, with crews now working south of Sierra St. The contractor has provided the following tentative schedule:

Yarbs/DBC plans to perform the following work between Mission St. - Sierra St.:

  • 8/29 – 8/30 Remaining paving to be completed

Additional work will also be completed on the lights at Sierra St./Simpson. The lights are temporarily on a timer as the Golden St. Blvd project is taking place. Normally, a looped sensor in the pavement controls the lights, but they were taken out when the old pavement was removed. As it stands, only one lift of asphalt has been installed – and the sensors are installed after all paving has occurred. This work is scheduled for next week, allowing the more convenient sensor system to return.

School Resource Officers

Kingsburg School Districts welcomed two new School Resource Officers (SRO) this school year. Officer Arevalo is the new School Resource Officer for Kingsburg High School and Oasis. Officer Castellanos is the new School Resource Officer for Kingsburg Elementary- RJJH.

The positions are being funded through a partnership between the city and the two Districts, with the Schools paying for the officer's salary and benefits. The remaining costs related to equipment, tools, training and education are the responsibility of the city, funded via Measure E.

This Week in History

On August 25, 1939, The Wizard of Oz, which became one of the best-loved movies in history, opens in theaters around the United States.

Based on the 1900 children’s novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, by L. Frank Baum (1856-1919), the film starred Judy Garland as the young Kansas farm girl Dorothy, who, after being knocked unconscious in a tornado, dreams about following a yellow brick road, alongside her dog Toto, to the Emerald City to meet the Wizard of Oz. Along the way, Dorothy encounters a cast of characters, including the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion and the Wicked Witch of the West. Though the scenes in Kansas were shot in traditional black and white, Oz appears in vivid Technicolor, a relatively new film process at the time. Nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Picture category, The Wizard of Oz lost to the Civil War-era epic Gone With the Wind. The Wizard of Oz won a Best Song Oscar for “Over the Rainbow,” which became one of Garland’s signature hits. Garland won a special award at that year’s Oscar ceremony, for Best Juvenile Performer.

Filmed at MGM Studios in Culver City, California, The Wizard of Oz was a modest box-office success when it was first released, but its popularity continued to grow after it was televised for the first time in 1956. An estimated 45 million people watched that inaugural broadcast, and since then The Wizard of Oz has aired on TV countless times. Today, some of the film’s famous lines, including “There’s no place like home” and “Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore” are well-known to several generations of moviegoers.
