A Day of New Beginnings
June 26th brings hope in the heart of Streeterville
After years of thoughtful space planning, tireless fundraising, and good ol' fashioned hard work, Ronald McDonald House near Lurie Children's opened on a bright and cheerful summer's day this past June with a week of celebratory opening receptions and Open Houses. Friends of the House gathered across the street for a formal ceremony which including speeches from Governor Pat Quinn, Chicago Bears Head Coach Lovie Smith and his wife MaryAnne, McDonald's CEO Jim Skinner and many others topped off by an uplifting performance from Soul Children of Chicago singing "The Future's Up to Me and You". Tears of joy, gratefulness and hope were shed as our VP of Operations, Mary Agnes Laguatan, thanked all who made this House possible and reflected on what an amazing gift this House gives to families in medical crisis. Finally, little Max Herrick concluded the ceremony by cutting the ceremonial ribbon along with his good friend, Ronald.
The word "thank you" does not do justice to the humble gratitude RMHC-CNI would like to express to our volunteers, friends and donors who made this day possible. We hope that everyone associated with the building of this beautiful House feels a great sense of pride in knowing that we are able to House 75 families each and every night.

Volunteers Make Our House a Home
August and September Volunteer Orientation and Training Dates

With over 600 volunteer shifts to fill each month, we rely heavily on our volunteers to help run the House. We are excited to announce our fall training schedule to our eager volunteer army!
We have broken our on-boarding schedule into three different levels of training depending on what type of volunteer position you would like to hold at the House.
The Information Session will give a history of the House and our Charity, an overview of the volunteer opportunities in the House, an explanation of our volunteer schedule, an introduction to our Volunteer Programs staff, and an opportunity to fill out our new application and shift preference form. All interested volunteers are welcome, as it is a great introduction to all of the ways you can volunteer at the House but this session is required for Family Ambassadors and House Refreshers.
Orientation I will be a complete House tour which will be required for our Family Ambassadors and House Refreshers, to get a solid sense of the layout of the House so that they can be well-informed ambassadors for our families and any special visitors.
Orientation II will be the final training and required for Family Ambassadors and House Refreshers. At this training, you will receive specific instructions on what your volunteer role at the House will entail and where the supplies you will need to complete your tasks are located.
You only need to attend ONE of EACH training if you would like to be a Family Ambassador or House Refresher. Please see the below chart for times and locations.
To save your spot at the above trainings, please RSVP by clicking here. We look forward to meeting all of you and empowering our army of volunteers with the knowledge they will need to serve our families!

Quote From a Family:
"When family is far away and hospital visits are truly gut wrenching, it means so much for anyone to even say hello to you. The entire House oozes support, warmth, and caring. Everyone has an extended family feel to them!"

A Warm Welcome Deserves a Hearty THANK YOU!
Streeterville Organization of Active Residents Hosts an Open House at RMH
Streeterville Organization of Active Residents (SOAR) held an Open House and Ice Cream Social on August 1st. Tours led by staff and SOAR members (who are also active RMH volunteers) helped our new neighbors see first-hand how Ronald McDonald House serves families in medical crisis. Additionally, the Ice Cream Social brought our families and neighbors together to enjoy a cool treat on the rooftop retreat. Over 120 SOAR members and guests attended.
Not only was it wonderful to meet our new neighbors, but they didn't arrive empty handed. Each neighbor brought an item (or two, or three) from our wishlist to help stock our pantries and cleaning closets. Now THAT is a warm welcome!
We are overjoyed at the positive response our neighbors have given us since throughout the construction process and since we have moved in. THANK YOU to the Streeterville Community for welcoming us with open arms and committing your time, talent and resources to your new neighbors on the block!

Volunteer Spotlight
Meet Linn Terrell
Linn, a Streetville resident, started volunteering for Ronald McDonald House near Lurie Children's when the new House opened. Linn first wished to volunteer at our Deming House, but once she heard of our move to her own neighborhood of Streetville, she decided to wait for training at the new House.
Linn and her family first heard of Ronald McDonald House when her nephew suffered from a massive heart attack while attending a Notre Dame game in South Bend with his family. He was rushed to the local South Bend hospital and the family was able to utilize Ronald McDonald House Family Room within the Hospital.
After utilizing that wonderful space, Linn and her family understood how important it was to have that kind of support and space during such a difficult time. The support for her and the rest of the family meant the world to them.
When Linn comes to the House to volunteer, she always has a smile on her face and is ready to help families. She says the best part of volunteering is "The kids- I love seeing the children."

Family Programs Update
Never a dull moment at Ronald McDonald House!
Designed as a "daily diversion" for our families staying at the House, our Family Activities programming has hit the ground running. Activities such as bean bag tournaments, bingo, bake night, ice cream socials, nail polish parties, improv night, make-over parties, sculpture lessons, rooftop carnivals, story nights, hula hoop competitions and milk and cookie breaks have all proven successful for all ages. We've even had several music groups serenade our families during dinner! The House is more alive and spirited thanks to the many volunteers who have shared their talents and time with our families.
If you are interested in producing a Family Activity, click here to learn more and check our Family Activities calendar for availability. Contact Anne Czarnecki to sign up!

Meals from the Heart Update
Cooking for 100 people with ease
Professional athletes, hotels, restaurants, department stores, book clubs, church groups, families, friends, professional organizations, alumni organizations, fellow non profits, and RMHC committees have one thing in common- they've cooked for over 100 people in our new, state-of-the-art Meals from the Heart kitchen at our new House!
Over 70 meals have already been prepared for our families. Taco nights, a pig roast, carving stations, build your own pizzas, Macy's signature "Chicken Pot Pies," Market House's signature mac and cheese, BBQ, and "breakfast for dinner" are just a sampling of delicious meals prepared on-site in our kitchen. No one in the House goes hungry thanks to these generous groups who bring all the ingredients to prepare the meal. THANK YOU to our groups who have already cooked a meal at the House- we hope you had fun in the process!
If you are interested in preparing a meal in the heart of our home, click here to check our Meals from the Heart calendar for availability and contact Kelly McNaughton to sign up!

Caring Partner Spotlight
Wendella Sightseeing Boats and Chicago Water Taxi partner with RMH

It never hurts to ask your friends for a little help. Since she started volunteering, Leahanna Horn couldn't stop talking to her friends and family about her experiences at the House. She was so proud to be a part of the charity and was filled with joy after each volunteer shift. One friend was touched so much by her stories of families at the House that he wanted "in" and thus our friendship with Wendella Sightseeing Boats and Chicago Water Taxi began!
Each Wednesday has now been dubbed "Wendella Wednesday" at the House, where families can coordinate with our Volunteer Programs team to receive donated tickets from Wendella to cruise the lake and river or get an architectural tour of our beautiful city. What a generous donation and a fabulous treat for our families.
THANK YOU Leahanna for having the "gusto" to talk about our House and our families with local business owners and THANK YOU Wendella for being such a caring partner. As you can see, our families have enjoyed the break you have provided to relax and enjoy Chicago from such a unique angle!

We are organizing a RMH near Lurie Children's team to participate in this year's Pulling for the House Saturday, October 13th! What do you pull? Teams of 12 get to test their might against a United Scrap Metal semi-truck, a fire truck and 80,000 lb. semi-truck!
Team members can fundraise with a FirstGiving page online or on Facebook. The goal is for everyone to raise $200 - that's 20 friends giving $10....and 100% of the donations will benefit our House!
The event is held in the McDonald's Corporation parking lot in Oak Brook, a 30 minute drive from the House. We plan on organizing car pools for those who do not want to drive. Registration opens at 9:00 a.m. and pulling begins at 10:50 a.m. There will also be a Kid's Carnival from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
Are you interested in being a part of our team? Or, if physical labor is not your thing, perhaps you'd be willing to help us raise the money? Please contact Alli Turner at aturner@rmhccni.org, 312-888-2506, or visit her on the 5th floor. She will be happy to get you set up.
