VALENTINE'S WEEK

Is this a Romance or

is this a Scam?

According to FBI.gov, Romance Scams occur by the suiter using a fake online identity to spark relationships with victims.

Dating scammers are all over most dating and social media sites to establish relationships. They tend to be kind and caring, and believable more often than not. They are professionals at what they do and eventually ask for money to reduce hardships.

If you are dating, here are some tips to avoid a scam that could leave your bank account dry:

  • Be discreet about the personal information you post online or in a dating app.
  • Don’t get invested too quickly in a relationship. Getting to know someone is the best part of dating.
  • Don’t leave the dating site too quickly for outside conversation. The chat feature on the site is a tool to get to know your match before taking the conversation off-site.
  • Beware if someone asks for anything inappropriate, including photos or financial information.
  • Never send anyone money (for any reason) to an individual from a social or dating site.

If someone asks you for money or you suspect a relationship scam, STOP CONTACT IMMEDIATELY and file a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.
